Course summary


Our training programme is varied, innovative and inspiring. Through it, our trainees have access to excellent teaching and a variety of experiences in our partner schools.  The core elements of our programmes have been developed over 20 years of experience. ‘Trainees learn not only what to teach and how to teach it, but also develop a deep understanding of how children learn. Trainees forge their own identity as a teacher and become impressive role models’ OFSTED 2022 

Trainees will spend time in school every week, which promotes application of theoretical learning to classroom practice. Training is front-loaded to the Autumn term, which means more time in school during the Summer term preparing for being a fully-fledged ECT. Apprentices, because they are being paid for their training, will probably be expected to hold more solo class teaching responsibilities from the outset of the programme. Whilst in school, apprentices should also be given opportunities to observe successful teachers; teach children in small groups up to whole classes; plan and deliver learning to children (with coaching and mentoring from expert School Based Trainer) and join in with school-led training opportunities.

We assess trainee skills by judging impact on the outcomes for the children being taught. Information for assessment is presented in written formats, portfolios, presentations and tutorial discussions. All assessments are continuous throughout the year through individual tasks and group projects.

Core Training takes place at our dedicated training centre and in venues across the area. It provides inspirational, hands-on training from safeguarding to subject knowledge; behaviour management to building resilience; well-being to pedagogy, and much more.  Training days provide an opportunity to share experiences, while learning from our expert trainers. These sessions provide trainees with ‘headspace’ and an opportunity to reflect on teaching, as well as learning new skills and pedagogies to take back to school. 

The Apprenticeship route (paid for by the Apprenticeship Levy) only leads to the award of QTS, applicants can have the option to study for the PGCE element at their own personal cost, currently £1,350, but because of the class teaching responsibilities, we usually recommend that the PGCE is taken as a “bolt on” during the ECT years.

School placements

All our Partnership schools are selected on the basis of their effectiveness and expertise. The Partnership thrives because of the active role that schools take in the design and delivery of the programme and because of their commitment to training teachers in their schools. 

Our partnership includes a range of schools including large urban schools; those in areas of social deprivation; village schools and faith schools. ‘The Partnership is contributing to a culture of education and aspiration locally and further afield’ OFSTED 2022

Trainees are immersed in the school from the outset, meaning that they ‘live and breathe’ real-life teaching and become a valued member of the school team. Trainees spend most of the year in their ‘home school’, with a 6 week placement in an alternative school and alternative key stage, as well as a short time in a special school. Trainees are mentored by an SBT (School-Based Trainer) during the year, which means all training programmes are bespoke to each individual trainee, resulting in them being the best teacher they can be!

Our schools are mainly in Milton Keynes and its surrounding areas, but we work with many other schools in Northants, Beds and Bucks where the headteachers are willing to fund the Apprenticeship route, so if you are currently working in those areas, you can talk to us about this in your interview. Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

We do not offer equivalency tests ourselves, but we accept results from a number of agencies, please check with us.

NB. For the Apprenticeship route, it is very important to be aware that if you do not have standard (or equivalent) GCSEs in English and Maths, you will be expected to have BOTH an Equivalency Test AND a Level 2 Functional Skills Test in order to satisfy ITT entry criteria and ESFA funding regulations.

For Science, an equivalency test alone is sufficient.

Personal qualities

The most important personal quality for teaching is wanting to create opportunities for young people to learn new skills and develop their understanding of the world. Successful teachers co-operate, collaborate and work on their own initiative. The ability to make good, professional relationships with children is paramount to being a successful teacher and we value the individuality of our trainees. For the Apprenticeship, it is important that you have thought about why you want to train to teach and have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of what the roles and responsibilities of the modern day primary teacher are.

Other requirements

Salaried apprentices will nearly always have already had at least a year’s worth of experience in a school as a Teaching Assistant or HLTA. It is important to understand that a salaried route has whole class teaching expectations inherent with it from the outset, so is, by and large, only offered where an applicant is deemed at interview to be suitable for fulfilling this role.


The Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship route requires your supporting to school to pay you as an Unqualified Teacher for the duration of the training period (which includes the End Point Assessment in the Autumn Term FOLLOWING the award of QTS). Your supporting school will also be responsible for paying the cost of your course fees, £9,000, by drawing funds down from their Apprenticeship Levy.

Please be aware that the expectations of the Apprentice route are different from the tuition fee route (in which trainees are in class in a supernumerary role and are supported/mentored in class by an experienced class teacher). Apprentices, on the other hand, will usually be required to hold solo class teaching responsibilities from the outset of the programme, which means that headteachers will often only support applicants already known to them where they are aware of an applicant’s abilities to sustain the teaching responsibilities alongside training.

The Apprenticeship route (paid for by the Apprenticeship Levy) only leads to the award of QTS, applicants can have the option to study for the PGCE element at their own personal cost, currently £1,350, but because of the class teaching responsibilities, we usually recommend that the PGCE is taken as a “bolt on” during the ECT years. Should an applicant want to undertake the PGCE during their Apprenticeship year, the ability to manage the workload required would need to be discussed further at interview.

As the most established primary (including EYFS and SEND) teacher training provider in Milton Keynes, we have over 20 years’ experience in leading initial teacher training and have provided the region with hundreds of primary teachers. As part of a large, successful Multi-Academy Trust, we provide CPD for teachers throughout their career, which gives our ITT team added expertise to bring to your training journey.

We offer undergraduate and postgraduate SCITT, School Direct, Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeships and Assessment Only pathways. We also validate QTS for other providers in the area and are delighted to work with the well-respected Birmingham City University for both our PGCE and our trail-blazing, school-based undergraduate route.

Our modern training centre is newly refurbished and we have study facilities every day during term time.

Interview process

We enjoy interviewing prospective teachers and discovering with applicants whether they are suited to teacher training and how our particular school-based pathway would work for them and their learning styles. The interviews are usually conducted by a member of the Initial Teacher Training team and a Head Teacher/Deputy Headteacher from one of our Partnership schools.

The interview activities are deisgned to evidence how applicants engage and interact with children and this gives us an idea of an applicant’s potential to train - applicants at this stage are not expected to be able to teach the ‘perfect’ lesson!

Remember, learning to teach is a journey and trainees can be really successful from whatever starting point they have, whether they are a Teaching Assistant who has been in school for many years or someone with very little classroom experience. Our interview process is designed to explore that with applicants, but as this is a salaried apprenticeship route, which inherently has expectations of solo classroom teaching from the outset, the interview will reflect this extra expectation and applicants will need to demonstrate that they have the classroom experience and personal qualities to undertake this programme.

(In addition, should an apprentice applicant be considering undertaking the PGCE element during their training year, they would need to be able to demonstrate at interview how they would manage both the demands of their classroom preparation and responsibilities, alongside the academic assisgnments needed for the PGCE).

International candidates

To apply for this teaching apprenticeship course, you’ll need to have lived in the UK for at least 3 years before the start of the course.

EEA nationals with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme who have lived continuously in the EEA, Switzerland, Gibraltar, or the UK for at least the previous 3 years will also be eligible.

You’ll also need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Training with disabilities and other needs

Our course is accessible to anyone with a disability, provided they meet the ‘Health and physical capacity to train to teach’ requirements, which are assessed by a reputable Occupational Health Service. Our training room is accessible to people with a physical disability. Some of our schools are more accessible than others to those with a disability and this would be considered, as necessary, when deciding which schools to place you in. We use electronic portfolios of documents and this has supported applicants in the past with dyslexia. Dyslexic applicants still have to meet the course entry requirements, including assessment of your fundamental English and Maths skills, and you should check what special arrangements we can make, if this applies to you.
