PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Our well-established programme, rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in 2016, requires trainees to develop a wide range of teaching skills, to reflect on their practice, and to demonstrate they meet the Teachers’ Standards.
In summary we offer:
- a mixture of experiential and academic learning;
- excellent pastoral care, well-being training and support;

- high-quality training delivered by skilled and experienced practitioners;
- one-to-one personalised support throughout the training year from in-school mentors and the YTCA SCITT team;
- bespoke curriculum and subject knowledge development training;
- support with finding school employment once qualified;
- the opportunity to complete a PGCE in Primary and Secondary Education with Sheffield Hallam University (4 taught sessions, 2 modules, 2 practice-based assignments).
Our core curriculum is primarily delivered through “Hub Days”. They consist of workshops led by practicing teachers who are expert practitioners and are designed to develop strategies and skills for the classroom as well as opportunities to network with other trainees and reflect on practice. These include:
- Show and tell sessions – to share something that has worked well, a challenge or good resource.
- Book club – we have our own little SCITT library. Your challenge is to read all the books before the end of the year!
- Reading time – to read your Book Club book, research for your PGCE assignments or another topic of interest to you.
- Curriculum and Subject Knowledge Development Sessions – during the year, subject/primary specialists from our partner schools will come in to deliver specific training in subject/primary groups.
- Portfolio and Final Assessment support – trainees will receive guidance and support to develop their evidence base showing they have met the Teachers’ Standards.
Assessment for this course is through school experience (placements), a Reflective Portfolio containing evidence bundles, placement reports and a Final Assessment presentation.
The next full and part-time programmes will start in September 2020 and finish in the last week of June 2021 (full-time) or sometime in 2022 (part-time, dependent on timetable) for those trainees that meet the Teachers’ Standards.
Our aim is to be able to identify the highest quality candidates that meet our success criteria; those best prepared to begin QTS assessment and most likely to be graded as “Exceeds Teachers’ standards” by the end of their training.
If your application is successful we will invite you to an interview at one of our partner schools. The panel usually includes the SCITT Programmes Lead, a subject specialist and another ITT specialist.
The interview process includes:
Teaching a 25-minute lesson based on a topic and class data which you will receive prior to interview. We do take into account that you may never have taught before so we aren’t looking for a perfect lesson! Instead, we will be considering your potential to become a teacher!
A 10-minute presentation about the British education system, that you have pre-prepared;
A 30-minute interview which will cover your reasons for wanting to teach, your understanding of the role of the teacher, your own skills and attributes and how these might support you in your training and current issues in education.
Document check (ID & qualifications);
Subject knowledge test (30-40 minutes) - designed to assess the breadth and depth of your knowledge across the curriculum (primary) or in your subject (secondary).
How school placements work
The placements you complete during your training year will give you a breadth of experience and provide a range of opportunities for you to demonstrate you have met all the Teachers’ Standards.
We currently have 14 excellent partner schools with a proven track record of developing outstanding trainees.
The SCITT currently operates an “ABX” placement model where you will have the opportunity to teach 11 to 18 year old students across two or three placements.
Placement A consists of some school Induction Days and approximately 12 assessed teaching weeks. This is your opportunity to develop your core teaching skills.
Placement B consists of some school Induction Days and approximately 18 teaching weeks. You will be placed in a contrasting school so you can experience different things and develop your skills in different areas.
Placement X is for trainees that are doing Post-16. This will be short placement including some school Induction Days and approximately 6 teaching weeks. We will decide this based on your circumstances and needs.
We also have time set aside for Enrichment Experiences which include:
- Two days in a KS2 setting;
- Two days in a KS5 setting;
- Two days in other educational settings. These might include visits to a Pupil Referral Unit, Special Needs schools/units, schools with specialisms, etc.
We take into consideration information given to us by successful candidates regarding issues with travel, etc.
Part-time calendars are created in negotiation with the trainee and their placement school – please contact us if you would like to discuss this further.
The course fees for 2020 to 2021 are as follows:
GCSEs at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics.
An degree at classification 2:2 or above from a UK university (or equivalent):
- All subjects are acceptable;
- Third class degrees will be considered on an individual basis;
- If you are in your final year at University we will look at your predicted grade.
A-Levels - if your degree is not directly related to the subject you want to teach we consider your A-level qualifications.
We usually see candidates demonstrate the following in successful applications and interviews:
- A genuine desire to support young people and help them develop and succeed;
- Evidence of a commitment to and an understanding of a career in teaching;
- A proactive and reflective approach to their own development;
- The ability to relate to and engage with young people;
- A passion for their subject;
- Excellent interpersonal skills;
- Effective communication skills including the ability to explain concepts clearly;
- Initiative, innovation and resilience.
Good subject knowledge (assessed at interview);
Whilst not compulsory, we recommend that you have some recent experience of working in a school so that you fully understand the expectations and demands of the role of a teacher. If successful at interview…
- Completed medical questionnaire;
- Enhanced DBS clearance by us which is subscribed to the Update Service;
- RO2 and declaration form (relating to Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974).

- We run a ‘Healthy Mind, Healthy You!’ strand through our Core Training Programme. This looks at how to maintain well-being and build resilience as a trainee;
- Placement school mentors have responsibility for ensuring the welfare of trainees placed with them;
- Each trainee will also have a designated member of the YTCA SCITT team to support their well-being during the course. The support will take the form of regular contact via email/phone, half-termly meetings and can also include additional support where required;
- Each trainee is assigned a buddy.
