Course summary

We offer a School Direct training programme, leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) awarded by the York St John University. Courses last one year and are full time.

You will be based in a school gaining experience in the classroom from the start, working alongside qualified teachers and being supported by alliance tutors. During the course of your training you will undertake placements in contrasting schools in our alliance, to widen your experience.

Throughout, you will be supported by school-based mentors and alliance tutors who will be there to give you help, advice and feedback.

In addition, you’ll also receive support and input from York St John University. As well as QTS and a PGCE, successful students will also complete two master’s level modules during the year, gaining 60 master’s credits.

Our training places are in good and outstanding schools in Scarborough, Bridlington, Whitby, Filey and surrounding areas. All our partner schools are committed to supporting trainees to be the very best teachers they can be.

Many of our trainees have secured jobs in schools in our alliance following their training.

To apply for our programmes, you need to be a graduate, ideally with a 2:2 or above.

We welcome graduates from a degree related to their chosen subject. SKE is available for some subjects depending on other qualifications and experience. We would encourage applicants to seek relevant experience doing some form of paid or voluntary work working with young people.

We encourage a community of learning with partnership at the heart of the program. University-based staff work together with schools, mentors, local and national subject communities and other education professionals to develop outstanding student teachers who are:

transformative and creative professionals highly motivated and committed autonomous and independent enquiry based practitioners self-reflective practitioners

The programme is committed to delivering outstanding education and training that is current and relevant. We provide excellent opportunities for student teachers to develop their knowledge and understanding of their subject and wider educational issues, so that they are equipped to be outstanding teachers and leaders with both a strong subject and a wider professional identity.

We have high standards for the young people in our schools and the adults who work with us.

School placements

Your school placements will take place in two of our Trust or wider alliance secondary schools. You will also spend time in a KS5 setting and alternative provision.

We will endeavour to find a placement school within a reasonable distance from your home address. We make every effort to support travel arrangements and childcare arrangements and we consider this when making placement decisions.

As a trainee with Scarborough TSA (Coast & Vale Learning Trust) , you will be treated as a professional colleague and member of school staff from day one.

There is also a requirement that you spend 5 days in a KS2 class ideally prior to starting with us in September. We realise that this is not always possible and will support you during your training year if this placement still needs to be carried out.

Our School Direct programme is accredited by the Outstanding York St John University.

Partnership is at the heart of ITE programmes. YSJ work to ensure its programmes reflect the latest research and evidence. The combination of experienced university, school based and other external colleagues working in partnership, makes a powerful and inspiring teaching team across a range of learning settings, providing quality experiences for our student teachers

Interview process

Interviews for the programme will take place in alliance schools.

However, in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic there may still be a requirement that we interview prospective student teachers using an online platform like Skype or Zoom. Online interviews will be conducted by the Alliance Lead or a senior member of staff with current experience of interviewing ITE candidates.

The interview panel will make you feel as welcome as possible. The idea is to get to know you and find out if you have the qualities we require to train to teach.

Following a welcome and introduction to the programme you will be asked to take part in a short teaching task. This will normally be carried out with group of pupils where you will be asked to teach them a particular topic You will have prepared this before the interview day and bring the necessary resources with you.

You will also be asked to prepare a response to a journal article before the interview day and will verbally present your views. This is an essential element of the interview as we must assess the candidates’ capability to meet the academic expectations of the programme.

You will finally be asked a series of core interview questions to further assess your suitability to teach.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.
