Course summary

The Stourport SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) is committed to providing the best school based training experience in the area. The final qualification is for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), with a PGCE accredited through Birmingham City University. There is extensive subject knowledge support and a strong connection with placement schools, in order to ensure a ‘joined up’ approach to the course, trainee wellbeing and support.

The secondary Business Studies course is for prospective teachers of business and entrepreneurship. Each successful applicant will be given a full opportunity to demonstrate competency in Business Studies at the interview and selection stage. Excellent support for trainees is offered by outstanding teachers and an SLE (Specialist Leader of Education). Trainees will be based at the SCITT Training Rooms for most training blocks and will be offered placements at two different secondary schools within the local area during the course.

Please contact us direct on 01562 542574 option 3, email jhomer@saet.co.uk or check out our website on www.stourportscitt.com We will be pleased to answer any questions you may have regarding the course, the support or the final qualification.

School placements

As we are very much ‘school centred’ you will spend a large proportion of the year in schools, so you will be immersed in school life from day one. We work with many schools across Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire. These are from a range of settings; from urban schools to more rural locations. We place trainees sensitively and would not normally expect you to have to travel for more than 30 minutes from home to get to your placement school.

You will teach students within secondary age ranges, pertinent to your subject area. The school placements are with two contrasting schools to maximise your teaching experience. Placement one is at the very beginning of the Autumn term, giving you an invaluable insight in to the start of the school year and the expectations surrounding this important time for children.

Your development will be supported by five intensive training blocks, delivered by experts and practicing teachers to ensure that you have excellent, current pedagogy. You will be given a mentor in each of your placements whom you will meet each week to discuss your progress. You will also be thoroughly immersed in the pastoral role of a teacher; you will be assigned to support a tutor group to gain an excellent understanding of the critical work a tutor does to monitor academic progress as well as caring for students’ welfare.

You will also gain first-hand experience of how your placement school delivers spiritual, moral, social and cultural education, as well as sex and relationships education. Your placement school will also offer you experience in the extra-curricular provision offered to students. Past trainees have supported school trips, sporting events, drama productions and many other enrichment activities.

About the training provider

Welcome to the Stourport School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programme (code S95).

You have chosen to be part of the next generation of teachers, shaping the future of our young people. Teaching and learning is our core business and we are excited to share our knowledge with you, so you are fully prepared to teach!

Being a SCITT is very important to us. We apply cutting edge approaches to teaching and learning - rather like being a teaching hospital. Not only do we constantly explore new ideas and techniques for making learning exciting, engaging and fun, we also train you to be the teachers of tomorrow. The teachers in our schools are trained as mentors - guiding, supporting and assessing trainee colleagues as they move towards achieving Qualified Teacher Status and a PGCE. We work with a number of local secondary and primary schools to provide an experience like no other.

Why train to be a teacher with Stourport SCITT?

  • Comprehensive training and support programme
  • Outstanding employment rate
  • Receive a tax free bursary for many subjects
  • Work hand in hand with local schools across Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire

Interview process

If your application is successful you will be called to interview very quickly. Your interview will normally take place in a school setting appropriate to the age range you wish to teach. You will attend only one interview session, and this will take either a full morning or afternoon. You will be formally interviewed by one of the SCITT team and a subject specialist. In your formal interview we will discuss your application in further detail and your motivation for teaching.

We are looking for applicants with a clear passion for both teaching and their subject; strong candidates will also show that they are at ease with pupils. As part of this process you will also teach a short episode (30 to 40 minutes) in your subject area to a class. We are not looking for the ‘finished article’ at this stage but you should aim to show your enthusiasm for your subject and positive relationships with students. Once the lesson has finished you will have the opportunity to write a reflection on your lesson. We will also ask you to sit a recent external examination paper in your subject.

Once the interview process is complete we meet as a panel to discuss all elements of the process. We would then make a decision and inform candidates within three working days of interview.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)

Training with disabilities and other needs

We are a wholly inclusive training provider. We have worked with and supported trainee teachers with a range of needs and disabilities. We pride ourselves on meeting individual needs with a bespoke support package and mentoring guidance. Each trainee will be assessed on a individual basis.

Your health and well being is most important to us. We are proud of the occupational health and wellbeing support we provide.
