Many applicants to our school-centred ITT route bring a wide range of experience and skills. Former engineers bring a wealth of subject knowledge to their teaching of Physics and Maths. Applicants to either our Physics with Science or Physics with Maths routes would be welcome to apply via our ‘Engineers Teach Physics’ code which would open up a range of benefits including:
- access to national learning communities of other engineers training to teach Physics
- bespoke subject knowledge training to ensure you are ready to teach both subjects
- support in applying for Physics posts in our partnership.
The South West Teacher Training Physics course builds up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts; students should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how Science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.”
The SWTT Science programme is designed to enable you to teach, as a minimum, all the Science specified in the National Curriculum for Science at Years 7, 8 and 9, and your chosen Science specialism (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) at GCSE and at post-16. Trainees join the course with a variety of Science degrees and backgrounds. Few, if any, are confident from the start in all aspects of Science demanded by the National Curriculum or even by their own subject specialism. Early in the course you will complete a personal audit and begin an action plan to build on your subject knowledge, initially for the younger year groups, then for GCSE and beyond.
You will spend a minimum of fifteen days at our training centre in Exeter under the guidance of our Science Course Tutor, ensuring you will be able to:
Develop and plan innovative and exciting lessons using a variety of techniques, strategies and approaches, including Laboratory Practicals and e-learning, in order to extend your students’ scientific knowledge, understanding and skills.
Assess work for a range of ages and abilities, and ensure effective learning for all students.
Develop into a strong, critically reflective, classroom practitioner, who will go on to participate in, and influence the future development of Science Education.
Our trainees specialise in one Science but are prepared to teach Biology, Chemistry and Physics, ensuring their employability.
