The MFL Programme is a broad, ambitious and coherently sequenced curriculum which carefully crafts experiences and activities to support your success in the languages classroom.
Our curriculum is underpinned by the best available evidence of what makes great teaching drawn from the Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Core Content Framework (CCF) as well as the bodies of Second Language Acquisition and learning theories.
We use a variety of learning and teaching methods and afford our trainees the opportunities to share their pedagogical strategies and expertise.
We have cultivated excellent partnerships with our schools and Subject Mentors are expert practitioners who work hard to support our trainees.
Expert colleagues in a range of secondary school contexts deliver engaging and relevant guest lectures on our programme to model effective teaching strategies and to discuss and analyse curriculum and pedagogical decisions in order to positively impact the quality of our trainees’ teaching.
The Modern Languages PGCE group is a vibrant and diverse group of trainee teachers, often with wide-ranging, international experiences.
We encourage a strong ethos of working collaboratively, particularly to support one another in subject knowledge development. We are particularly keen to recruit applicants with a high standard of French, Spanish or German, sufficient to teach to GCSE and A level. Ideally, applicants will be able to offer another language for teaching, even if only for Key Stage 3 (pupils aged 11 - 14).
We also welcome applications from native speakers of French, Spanish or German who possess a high enough level of English to meet the academic requirements of the PGCE course. Applicants offering Italian may also be accepted if they are able to offer French or Spanish at a high level and as their first language for teaching.
Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses may be on offer for applicants who would benefit from development of their language skills prior to the start of the PGCE course. This applies especially to candidates’ second language for teaching. At St Mary’s we offer both French and Spanish SKE courses.
We look forward to working with you and supporting you to becoming teachers who go on to motivate and inspire the next generation of linguists.
