teach in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s also recognised internationally.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
As the only Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding’ provider in Stockton-on-Tees, we are a SCITT that prides itself on our bespoke programme personalised to meet your individual needs.
We prioritise your subject knowledge development, both in terms of content and pedagogy (how to teach Art and Design). Your Art and Design training in school is personalised to meet your unique needs and will include a variety of activities. You will be assigned a Art and Design specialist as your mentor. You will work closely with your mentor and other Art and Design colleagues within the school every day. Time will be spent observing experienced colleagues and learning about the craft of the classroom as well as weekly one to one sessions with mentors, participation in your placement school’s staff training, subject specific advice to support your planning and teaching, colleague and pupil shadowing and much more.
The ethos of the programme is experiential learning and as such, over 70% of your time will be spent in school learning from experienced, excellent teachers. You are assessed on an ongoing basis, through observation of your practice and reflective conversations with your mentor and professional tutor. We also offer the academic, Masters Level PGCE, accredited through Sheffield Hallam University. The PGCE is fully integrated into our programme, with direct links to Art and Design educational theory. You gain access to a vast online library as well as local university libraries. All PGCE work is undertaken in Stockton.
We have robust safeguarding procedures in place, therefore enhanced Disclosure and Barring Checks (DBS) and barred list checks are undertaken to ensure trainees are suitable to train to teach.
Our recruitment process follows a number of steps:
- Stage One: Screening
Applications are checked to ensure that applicants' qualifications meet the entry requirements.
- Stage Two: Scrutiny
Applications meeting the entry requirements are scrutinised by the Partnership against set criteria.
- Stage Three: School Based Interview Process
Candidates who are invited to participate in stage 3 of the selection process will attend a Partnership school where they will be required to undertake a teaching activity. This will be followed by a formal interview with head teacher or other school leaders and representatives from the Partnership and a written task. The process is designed to assess both spoken and written English, subject knowledge, ability to engage with young people and assess a trainee’s overall suitability to train to teach.
How school placements work
We work with a large number of schools in the Stockton area and beyond. Stockton’s educational outcomes are strong. Training with Stockton SCITT means working in successful schools, with excellent teachers who ensure pupils in Stockton get the best educational deal possible. Where primary schools have Ofsted judgements, 93.7% of Stockton primary school pupils attend a Good or Outstanding school. 95% of our partner primary schools in Stockton are Ofsted graded Good or Outstanding. For secondary, for those schools with Ofsted judgements, 92.5% of Stockton secondary school pupils attend a Good or Outstanding school. 92.3% of our partner secondary schools are Ofsted graded Good or Outstanding.
Trainees are assigned two placement schools across the year. You have a host (main placement) school that you will work with the majority of the year (autumn and summer terms) and a shorter second school placement in the spring term. In each school, you have a mentor dedicated to supporting your development.
In school, trainees follow one of three programmes:
- Age 3-7 primary programme, covering Key Stage One and the Early Years
- Age 5-11 primary programme, covering Key Stages One and Two
- Age 11-16 secondary programme, covering Key Stages Three and Four
In addition, all trainees will have the opportunity to engage with our ‘Wider Education Week’ visiting special schools and pupil referral units.
Placements take the individual circumstances of trainees into account, e.g. geographical location of the school in relation to your home.

We offer a laptop loan service for use throughout the course.
If you are responsible for Council Tax we are able to provide you with a letter to confirm your eligibility for discount as a full time student.
Applicants must already hold the following:
- GCSE English and Maths Grade C, Level 4 minimum (or equivalent)
Applicants must have achieved the following by the time the course starts:
- Honours degree at 2:2 or above. For secondary, we prefer your degree to have some connection to the subject you want to teach. Where this is not the case, relevant A Level qualifications and experience will be taken into account.
For non UK qualifications you will need a NARIC statement of comparability.
Teaching is an incredibly rewarding career. We are looking for potential; If you are passionate about making a difference to the lives of young people, have a positive outlook, are patient and adaptable, have good interpersonal skills, are creative and imaginative, have good organisational and time management skills, are reflective and strive to improve your own practice, then this could be the career for you. Previous school experience is not an essential criteria but if you are able to gain some experience, it could help inform your decision to train to teach and is one way to enhance your application.
Applications are enhanced by evidence of some experience in a school but it is not a condition for application.
Successful applicants will be required to undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring check, sign a declaration that they have not previously been excluded from teaching or working with children and complete a medical health questionnaire which may be subject to an occupational health referral. This will be arranged by the Partnership.
About the training provider
We are the only OFSTED rated ‘Outstanding’ provider in Stockton-on-Tees. Our unique approach combines focused specialist in-house training in how to teach alongside immersion in the school environment to develop your skills as a teacher. We are one of a very few providers who provide substantial in-house training alongside your placement in school. We believe that this better equips you to hit the ground running when you begin to teach. The training takes the form of taught sessions delivered by experienced, expert, outstanding qualified teachers and specialists. The sessions provide practical strategies and techniques that will support you when you are teaching in school. There are also many opportunities for you to learn from and teach your fellow trainees through sessions that allow you to share your successes, ideas and challenges with each other and reflect on your school experiences. You will benefit from a mentor dedicated to supporting your development as well as a professional tutor who will oversee your development throughout the year.
We have a reputation for excellence, which is why more trainees than ever are choosing Stockton SCITT. 100% of our trainees who completed the programme in 2019 were graded at least Good with 79% graded as Outstanding. We have expanded by 35% in the last year alone. Our employment rate is very strong with over 90% of trainees securing NQT positions every year; over 50% of our trainees go onto secure NQT positions in Stockton, many in the schools where they trained.
Training with disabilities and other needs
Our training space is housed in a building that is wheelchair accessible and has disabled parking and toilet facilities. All of our training takes place on the ground floor. For trainees with specific needs such as dyslexia or autism, we work with Occupational Health and the trainee to identify their precise needs and ensure that the appropriate support is put in place. For example, a recent trainee with dyslexia was provided with appropriate software on a loaned laptop, a smartpen, overlays and materials provided on yellow paper.
Many of our trainees are parents or become parents during the programme. We work with you to support you to manage the needs of your family alongside your training needs. For example, in the last year we have offered paternity leave, compassionate leave and temporary flexible training hours to manage a specific issue.
The well-being of all our trainees is very important to us. We continually monitor well-being through a number of mechanisms and individual support is put in place as required. All individual needs are taken into account when determining the location and nature of your placement schools.
