A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

This Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Secondary Modern Foreign Language leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), qualifying you to teach the 11-18 age group in secondary schools in England and Wales.

The programme has consistently been judged as excellent in both internal and external reviews, and is widely acknowledged as one of the best modern foreign language courses in the country.

You will specialise in one main teaching language (either French, German or Spanish) but we strongly encourage all trainees to teach a second language to at least beginner level.

Your tutors are a diverse and incredibly experienced community of academics with wide practical experience in schools and international reputations as experts in the field of Modern Foreign Language teaching and learning. The work of tutors is feeding into the DfE National Centre of Excellence for Language Pedagogy, and underpins the internationally renowned Professional Development Consortium in MFL, whose principles form the basis of the course. We have strong links to the Association for Language Learning and collaborate with expert practitioners such as those at The Language Gym. Many of the books and articles used on the course have been written by tutors themselves.

The PGCE will provide you with a theoretical framework for language teaching closely integrated with practical advice on the preparation and delivery of effective and engaging language lessons. Your assignments are designed to help you to plan your teaching effectively and imaginatively and to evaluate your skills, particularly in terms of the quality of learning achieved by pupils.

You will be taught through a series of lectures, practical seminars and workshops, where interactive and discussion-based techniques will encourage you to engage, reflect and challenge.

Sessions may include:

  • participating in workshop style sessions with your peers
  • attending presentations by subject experts
  • working on tasks in groups
  • having individual tutorials
  • visits to schools or other education settings
  • visits to theatres, museums, galleries or sites of educational interest
  • writing assignments on aspects of subject teaching and Professional Studies

These learning activities will help you to develop a toolkit of knowledge and skills, ensuring you are well prepared to tackle challenges and opportunities throughout your training and your career.

Alongside the University tutors, you will be taught and guided by a team of committed and experienced University-trained school mentors.

School placements

Placements enable you to develop the skills and knowledge valued and desired by employers - you will build your confidence in the classroom and gain practical teaching experience. Placements also provide you with the opportunity to connect with potential employers and build your professional network.

At Secondary level we have strong relationships with around 80 schools in the local and surrounding area. It is a testament to the strength of these partnerships and the regard with which our graduates are held, that most schools in Berkshire employ at least one graduate of the Institute of Education.

On your Secondary PGCE course you are required to carry out three placements in two different age groups - ensuring you receive a broad range of experiences. Two placements must be undertaken in a school setting but the third can be taken in a different setting - allowing you to sample teaching in an alternative environment.

We offer our students an unusually flexible and broad range of settings and educational environments - you will have the opportunity to gain experience in special needs schools, Pupil Referral Units, independent schools, museums, and charities.

You will have plenty of opportunities throughout your course to apply your developing skills in real settings. In schools, you will be involved in:

  • observation of other teachers
  • planning and teaching parts of lessons/small groups
  • planning and teaching lessons and sequences of lessons
  • reflecting on and evaluating your teaching
  • receiving feedback on your teaching
  • gaining experience of the range of responsibilities of classroom teachers.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

You are normally required to have at least a 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent from a university outside the UK).

Your degree subject should include a Language. Otherwise, you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

We accept English and Mathematics equivalency tests offered by the University of Reading. Details will be sent with the offer email.

On 23 June 2020 the UK government announced that, following the end of the transition period, EU students (with the exception of the Republic of Ireland) commencing a new programme of study will pay fees at the International rate with effect from the 2021/22 academic year.

Students starting a course in 2023 may still be entitled to pay fees at the UK student rate if they have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.

Financial support from the training provider

Students who have previously graduated from an undergraduate course at the University of Reading will be eligible for an alumni discount amounting to £1500.

This discount will also be available to Reading alumnus undertaking a non-salaried School Direct with PGCE course with one of our school partners.

The Institute of Education at the University of Reading is a large Initial Teacher Education provider that offers training to over 550 future teachers each year in the early years, primary and secondary phases.

Across all of our ITE programmes at the Institute of Education, you will learn about:

  • what is happening to our climate, how to help children learn about climate and sustainability in an age-appropriate and accessible way, and how to develop your own positioning as a teacher
  • climate justice, the impact of current and future changes to our environment and climate on ourselves and others and implications for teachers
  • how to translate knowledge and theory into change and personal action through building climate and sustainability education into your planning, teaching, and children’s learning.

Interview process

Interviews will be held in person at the Insitute of Education on our London Road campus. You will normally be interviewed by two MFL tutors who will see a group of applicants on the same day.

You will be asked to give a short presentation to the group on any aspect of teaching and learning a foreign language that interests you. The presentation should last no longer than five minutes and be in English (NB no audio-visual equipment will be available for this).

You will also have an individual interview on the same day:

  • Part of the interview will be in the foreign language
  • During the interview, you will be asked about your understanding of the key aspects of effective language teaching and wider educational issues

During the day you will also complete the following tasks:

  • Written task in the main teaching language on a general topic, given to you on the day.
  • Written task in English

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK for the duration of this course, you may need to apply for a Student visa.

To do this, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Training with disabilities and other needs
