A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

This Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Secondary Mathematics will lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), qualifying you to teach the 11-18 age group in secondary schools in England and Wales.

You will be taught at the University by experienced mathematics teachers, well versed in both theory and practice. Your placement in a local school will be supervised by expert mathematics teachers who are all specially trained as mentors. Many of them have been through the PGCE with us themselves, and are well placed to guide you. You will build up your classroom practice as you work closely with them in the early days, developing your skills and confidence until you can stand alone.

In schools, you will be involved in:

  • observation of other teachers
  • planning and teaching parts of lessons/small groups
  • planning and teaching lessons and sequences of lessons to classes
  • reflecting on and evaluating your teaching
  • receiving feedback on your teaching
  • experience of the range of responsibilities of classroom teachers and form tutors

Your university teaching is through a series of lectures, practical seminars and workshops, where interactive and discussion-based techniques will encourage you to engage, reflect and challenge.

Sessions will include:

  • participating in workshop style sessions with your peers
  • attending presentations by subject experts
  • working on tasks in groups
  • having individual tutorials
  • visiting schools or other education settings
  • collaborative lesson planning, delivery and evaluation

You’ll participate in active discussions around the key issues in teaching particularly focusing on how children learn, why they behave as they do and how you can motivate and support them. We have a strong social justice and climate curriculum where all views are welcomed.
These learning activities will help you to develop a toolkit of knowledge and skills, ensuring you are well prepared to tackle challenges and opportunities throughout your training and your career.

Your assignments actively connect the research and work of others in the field to what you’re doing in the classroom, and are thoroughly supported by staff and resources.

At the end of the course we offer our students an opportunity to get experience in a broad range of settings and educational environments such as special needs schools, Pupil Referral Units, independent schools, museums, and charities.

School placements

Placements enable you to develop the skills and knowledge valued and desired by employers - you will build your confidence in the classroom and gain practical teaching experience. Placements also provide you with the opportunity to connect with potential employers and build your professional network.

At Secondary level we have strong relationships with around 50 schools in the local and surrounding area, including grammar schools, academies and comprehensives, 11-16, 11-18 or 14-19, single sex or co-educational.

The selection of school will be primarily focused on geographical considerations to minimise the commute to school, but also on ensuring a range of experience. Most, if not all, of our partnership schools have our graduates on their staff, and many of our mentors are graduates and so are able to offer specific and targeted support.

You will be placed in one school for the majority of your training, with a short block in another school to ensure that you receive a broad range of experiences.

At the end of the course we offer our students an opportunity to get experience in a broad range of settings and educational environments such as special needs schools, Pupil Referral Units, independent schools, museums, and charities.

You will have plenty of opportunities throughout your course to apply your developing skills in real settings. In schools, you will be involved in:

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

You are normally required to have at least a 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent from a university outside the UK) in a subject that is related to the subject you intend to teach.

Your degree subject should be in mathematics or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

We accept English and Mathematics equivalency tests offered by the University of Reading. Details will be sent with the offer email.

We will also accept tests offered by astarequivalency.co.uk, mmerevise.co.uk or equivalencytesting.com.

Please email the university first to check acceptability if you are considering taking a test with another provider.

These checks are required to ensure you meet the Department for Education’s requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach, as well as assessing your suitability for working with children.

On 23 June 2020 the UK government announced that, following the end of the transition period, EU students (with the exception of the Republic of Ireland) commencing a new programme of study will pay fees at the International rate with effect from the 2021/22 academic year.

Students starting a course in 2023 may still be entitled to pay fees at the UK student rate if they have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.

Financial support from the training provider

Students who have previously graduated from an undergraduate course at the University of Reading will be eligible for an alumni discount amounting to £1500.

This discount will also be available to Reading alumnus undertaking a non-salaried School Direct with PGCE course with one of our school partners.

The Institute of Education at the University of Reading is a large Initial Teacher Education provider that offers training to over 550 future teachers each year in the early years, primary and secondary phases.

  • how to translate knowledge and theory into change and personal action through building climate and sustainability education into your planning, teaching, and children’s learning.

Interview process

Interviews will be held in person at the Insitute of Education on our London Road campus. You will be intervewed by one of the programme tutors and a second interviewer will also be present. Your interview invitation will give you full details of what you need to do to prepare for your interview.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK for the duration of this course, you may need to apply for a Student visa.

To do this, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Training with disabilities and other needs
