Financial support

A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

The Grange Academy in Bushey, Hertfordshire and Trinity Academy in Brixton, London are seeking to recruit a Teaching apprentice to join their English Departments.

Both schools are part of Future Academies, a multi-academy trust which runs ten academies. Our mission is to help young people succeed despite the many barriers that exist for them. We believe that with the right support, encouragement and opportunities, all young people have the potential to succeed in education and in life.

You will be employed by the school and train for one year to gain Qualified Teacher Status and the Post Graduate Certificate of Education from the University of Sussex. On this route you will have responsibility for your classes and will teach a higher loading from the start of about 16-18 lessons out of 30.

Our Initial Teacher Training curriculum is unique and the central focus of our teacher training programme, designed intentionally and sequenced iteratively, building upon what we know about cognitive science and the road to becoming an expert teacher. We delivery weekly training sessions where we aim to disseminate a research-informed aspect of training that links to our curriculum strands. Our training is rooted in exploitation of examples, and often, non-examples to exemplify how this aspect of training can be applied to your teaching practice most impactfully. Along the way, we endeavour to bust lingering educational myths and ensure our trainees have access to exemplar curriculum resources. We combine these sessions with practice-based, often subject-specific training to empower trainees with opportunities to apply the pedagogical principles to their own subject and classroom with the oversight of subject experts who can model best practice, support with the application of training and give feedback as well as to work collaboratively with your subject/phase peers. It is our philosophy that trainees should be given regular opportunities to practice in advance of a lesson and receive clear, specific, actionable feedback.

You will have a subject-specialist mentor in your school to guide and support you with your subject knowledge development and application of educational research in the classroom.

School placements

We run a compulsory induction programme for two weeks in July before the start of your placement to fully prepare you to teach from the start of the programme.

You will begin your placement at the start of the September term where you will become fully immersed in the school community. You will remain in this placement school for most of your training year as we believe this is the most effective way to experience all aspects of school life. To supplement this, you will also participate in focused placements, conducting a three to six -week placement in the spring term, which will offer you a contrasting experience within our network of excellent schools. This network includes many independent, grammar and specialist schools.

As part of your ongoing development, you will be released by your placement school for one afternoon per week to attend centralised training: Professional Studies. This weekly programme runs throughout the whole year.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:1 or above, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in English or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

Personal qualities

We also assess applicants for the following qualities in their preliminary applications and interviews:

  • A strong academic record and passion for your subject
  • Effective communication and leadership skills.
  • The enthusiasm required to work with children
  • Applicants are at an advantage if they have gained school experience.

Other requirements

In addition to the required qualifications above, before the start of the course, you will need to:

  • Provide proof of all qualifications
  • Complete an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check
  • Undergo an occupational health assessment to assess fitness for teaching.


There is no tuition fee to pay for this route as this is covered through the apprenticeship levy in your employing school. You will receive a salary on the unqualified teacher pay scale, this will be determined by your employing school. Interview process

There are 2 stages to our interview process.

Stage 1

  1. Pre-interview Tasks You will be required to complete a lesson planning task based on a set learning objective relevant to your subject or phase. You will also compose a short essay on what makes great teaching. Both tasks must be completed before the interview.

  2. Online Interview Interviews will be conducted online, last about 45-60 minutes and will usually be conducted by two members of the Future Teacher Training team. We will ask a series of questions about why you have chosen teaching as a career, why you have chosen our route and us as a provider. There will also be the opportunity to ask us any questions.

  3. Subject-Knowledge Task After the interview you will need to complete a subject-knowledge task. This is usually a past GCSE paper, for which no preparation is required. You will be informed within 48 hours if you have been successful.

Stage 2

Once successful at Stage 1, you will attend an in person interview at your potential placement school. This involves;

  • short teaching episode (25 minutes)
  • short interview by the school where you will reflect on your episode and subject knowledge.

You will normally hear within 1 working day the outcome of your second stage interview.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

Training with disabilities and other needs

The needs of the candidates will be taken into account at interview. Trainee teachers benefit from a mentor who leads their support throughout their training.

The central SCITT team meets with trainee teachers weekly through our Professional Studies programme. This allows us to regularly update our risk assessment of the trainee teacher and adapt the course accordingly. For the right candidate(s), we may also be able to support part-time. This would be discussed at the interview stage.
