A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Course summary

Our Science (biology) salaried course is identical to our unsalaried training programme but you will be employed, within one of our Future Academies schools, as a teacher trainee / apprentice and train for one year to gain Qualified Teacher Status and the Post Graduate Certificate of Education from the University of Sussex.

On this route, the key difference is that you will have responsibility for your own classes from the outset and will teach a higher loading from the start (approx. 16-18 lessons out of 30 per week). For this reason, prior experience within a school-setting with exposure to supporting students in the classroom is highly desirable and will strengthen your application.

This course will support trainees in guiding students to become scientifically literate. Those who are able to recognise the importance of rational explanation, capable of scientific analysis and knowledgeable about the contribution that the sciences make to our theoretical and practical understanding of the world.

As part of our course you will have exposure to a high-quality curriculum programme in Science that is designed so that foundational concepts are introduced at the outset and are carefully built upon, ensuring students develop an increasingly sophisticated and specialised understanding of the separate sciences. The conceptual and disciplinary knowledge that underpins the separate sciences will be studied in great detail.

You will have a subject-specialist mentor in your school to guide and support you with your subject knowledge development and application of educational research in the classroom.

We have a desire to reduce unnecessary workload for our teachers through the provision of planning documents, accompanied by classroom-ready resources that allow you to focus on the delivery of your lessons.

School placements

Where will you train?

You will begin your main placement at the start of September, becoming fully immersed in the school community from classroom to playground to staffroom. You will remain in your main host school for the majority of your training year, experiencing all aspects of school life and becoming a familiar face to pupils and teachers alike. To supplement this experience, you will undertake a second school placement in the spring term which will offer you a contrasting experience within our network of excellent schools. This network includes many independent, grammar and specialist schools and will be arranged based on your educational interests and desired experience.

Whilst you can’t pick your specific placement schools, we will allocate you to a school which is commutable and we feel matches your skillset.

We also run an induction programme for two weeks in July to prepare you for the classroom, so that you can hit the ground running from day one. It is also an excellent opportunity to meet your fellow trainees and future colleagues. Many of our alumni talk about this being an invaluable aspect of their training programme, making them ‘school-ready’ for the start of the academic year in September.

As part of your training, you will be released by your placement school for one afternoon per week (Tuesdays) to attend centralised teacher training. This weekly programme covers general pedagogical (teaching) knowledge as well as subject specific application and runs throughout the whole year. By the end of your training year, you will have mastered the art of enacting your training, under the watchful eye of your school-based mentor, to become an expert teacher who has made some great friendships along the way.

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

We are ideally looking for subject specialists that hold, or are due to hold before the start of training, a subject-specific (or closely-related) degree.

However, our recruitment process is designed to explore a candidate’s suitability to train on the chosen training programme. Where non-specialist candidates are successful they may be required to complete a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course prior to the start of training, therefore early application is actively encouraged for those that do not hold a subject-specific (or closely related) degree.

Your degree subject should be in biology or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

  • Please note - IELTS is NOT accepted as an equivalent qualification to GCSE English Language.

Personal qualities

We also assess applicants for the following qualities in their preliminary applications and interviews:

  • A strong academic record and passion for your subject
  • Effective communication and leadership skills.
  • The enthusiasm required to work with children
  • Applicants are at an advantage if they have gained school experience.

Other requirements

In addition, before the start of the course, you will need to:

  • Provide original certificates as proof of qualifications (those obtained overseas will require a statement of comparability, obtained via ENIC, to demonstrate equivalency against the DfE’s ITE entry criteria).

  • Complete an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check

  • Undergo an Occupational Health assessment to assess fitness for teaching.

  • Further documentation required to meet all safer recruitment checks e.g. overseas criminal record check or certificate of good conduct where applicable.

For all successful applicants, this will take place as part of our onboarding process (with full guidance).

Salary

There is no tuition fee to pay for this route as this is covered by your employing school / the apprenticeship.

You will receive a salary on the unqualified teacher pay scale, this will be determined by your employing school. The amount will vary depending on your duties, the number of lessons you will be teaching and the location of your school.

Our unique ITT curriculum is designed and sequenced intentionally, underpinned by cognitive science and the road to becoming an expert teacher. The spine of our training programme is delivered through weekly practice-based, research-informed training sessions. By organising our curriculum into seven strands, trainees benefit from the expertise of high-profile and expert specialists overseeing these strands: our Head of Inclusion, for example, is a SEND advisor at the EEF.

The Trust Curriculum Centre design and develop exemplar resources and provide subject-led training on the delivery of these. We know that workload is often a concern for those entering the teaching profession. We believe that trainees should have the opportunity to learn from using and adapting the best curriculum resources available.

Unlike other programmes, we give our trainees extensive training on the principles of curriculum design in order to support them with making more effective decisions in the classroom.

Interview process

There are 3 parts to our stage 1 interview which assesses a candidate’s suitability to ‘train to teach’, as follows:

  1. Pre-interview Tasks - You will complete a planning task based on a set learning objective relevant to your subject or phase. You will also compose a short essay on what makes great teaching. Both tasks must be completed before the interview.

  2. Online panel Interview - we will explore the extent of your subject knowledge and ask a series of questions about why you have:

  • chosen teaching as a career

  • chosen a school-centered route

  • chosen us as a specific training provider of choice.

  1. Post-interview tasks - after the remote interview you will complete a subject-knowledge task. This is a timed task that usually incorporates a GCSE exam-style question, for which no preparation is required. Candidates are also required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment to check that these skills meet the minimum standard appropriate to the profession.

We aim to inform you of our decision within 72 hours of your interview.

For candidates applying to our salaried / apprenticeship courses - if successful at the stage 1 interview, there will be a final in-person interview at the intended employing school. The purpose of this interview is to assess a candidate’s suitability for the salaried route, which invariably involves a higher teaching load from the start of the course, and also provides an opportunity for both the candidate and school to meet and explore suitability.

International candidates

To apply for this teaching apprenticeship course, you’ll need to have lived in the UK for at least 3 years before the start of the course.

EEA nationals with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme who have lived continuously in the EEA, Switzerland, Gibraltar, or the UK for at least the previous 3 years will also be eligible.

You’ll also need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

Training with disabilities and other needs

Any needs specified by the candidate will be taken into account during the arrangements of the interview e.g. where relevant, additional time for timed tasks.

Trainees offered a place to train with us, who have disclosed a disability, will benefit from a welfare meeting conducted by one of our SCITT leads, either before or at the start of training, to discuss how we can support your training journey.

Trainee teachers benefit from a mentor who leads their support throughout their training.

The central SCITT team meets with trainee teachers weekly through our Professional Studies programme. This allows us to regularly update our risk assessment of the trainee teacher and adapt the course accordingly.

For the right candidate(s), we may also be able to support part-time. This would be discussed at the interview stage.
