Our Geography salaried course is identical to our unsalaried training programme but you will be employed, within one of our Future Academies schools, as a teacher trainee / apprentice and train for one year to gain Qualified Teacher Status and the Post Graduate Certificate of Education from the University of Sussex.
On this route, the key difference is that you will have responsibility for your own classes from the outset and will teach a higher loading from the start (approx. 16-18 lessons out of 30 per week). For this reason, prior experience within a school-setting with exposure to supporting students in the classroom is highly desirable and will strengthen your application.
Whilst on the course you will have exposure to a high-quality common curriculum programme that is being introduced to Year 7 students in 2023 with the importance of memory in mind.
We expect our students to be knowledgeable about the places, concepts and processes that they have studied and be able to draw on this knowledge to articulate a clear and coherent understanding of the interactions between human and physical processes on planet earth.
As a trainee on this course, you will receive regular training from our Curriculum Lead where you will consider what it means to think, speak and write like a geographer. With the progression of geographical knowledge and understanding at the core of our training and teaching, your training will include fieldwork, sessions around Key Stage 4 and 5 teaching as well as exposure to a wide variety of Key Stage 3 topics.
You will have a subject-specialist mentor in your school to guide and support you with your subject knowledge development and application of educational research in the classroom.
We have a desire to reduce unnecessary workload for our teachers through the provision of planning documents, accompanied by classroom-ready resources that allow you to focus on the delivery of your lessons.
