A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

We are looking for applicants who have a real passion for being in the classroom and who want to share their love of for languages with our students.

You will be passionate about your subject, dedicated to developing your craft and have the children in East Lancashire at the centre of your decision making. We want teachers who are willing to go the extra mile to make a difference to our students lives.

You will also be required to meet the DFE’s standards for physical and mental fitness to teach and clearance to work with children. Further information, including a Declaration of Health questionnaire and details of how to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer. Your offer is conditional on completing ALL conditions of entry.

This is an exciting course, you will spend time in two of our partner schools across East Lancashire. And will have the opportunity to spend 6 weeks at one of our European partner schools.

The course will provide you with critical understanding of education theory and practice relevant to MFL:

You will become a reflective practitioner develop a deep understanding and application of subject knowledge and understand how to assess this subject.


You will be assessed both in school through observations of your practice as a teacher and are assessed against our innovative curriculum.

The PGCE academic assignments support the professional development you are engaged in during the school based element of the training. Comprising of essays; evaluations of school-based teaching and learning and presentations. They will support you to link your practical experience and reflections to educational theory to ensure your students outcomes are the best they can be.


In school, you will have a subject mentor and a Professional Mentor who will support you to make outstanding progress through timetabled coaching sessions. Your Lead subject coach will ensure your subject pedgagogy equips you for your future career.

Through our core professional programme you will be supported to develop your pedagogic understanding and your classroom practice.


Trainees are expected to take advantage of a variety of enrichment opportunities that will challenge and extend their skills and enhance employment potential. Such activities may include Duke Of Edinburgh, after school clubs, educational trips and visits and being part of the pastoral team.

School placements

The Training Programme is designed by experienced professional practitioners who share a passion for teaching and learning. Our common commitment is to ensure that our next generation of teachers is equipped on every level - personally, intellectually and professionally - to inspire new generations of learners in our schools.

Placements can be at any of our wider partners from across East Lancashire.

Throughout, you will be challenged, stretched, encouraged and driven to become an outstandingly good teacher. You will be trained in at least two of the partner schools in order to gain contrasting experiences of educational issues, such as discipline/behaviour management, for example.

Since 2021 we have established a European partnership with “Teaching Together in Europe. This partnership means our trainees can apply to spend 6 weeks in our of European partner schools - The English College in Prague, The British School in Brussels and St George’s, Rome.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in modern languages with Spanish or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

We accept the Prestolee SCITT equivalency. Please contact us for further details

Other requirements

As a safer recruitment provider, we are committed to safeguarding children. A satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is a course requirement and is completed ahead of starting the programme.

We complete checks of relevant suspension and prohibited lists. We ask you to disclose any information that would subsequently be made known to us through the DBS process, and/or other relevant disclosures to be investigated as part of our safeguarding responsibilities.

If successful, you will also be required to complete a health check to assess if you are fit to teach.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.

Ours is an Initial Teacher Training and Education partnership, founded on decades of highly successful teacher training experience and informed by the latest educational research.

The core of our partnership comprises three strong schools plus a wider partnership with schools across East Lancashire. We work closely with Tor View Special School who lead on our primary programmes and on SEND. The Embrace Teaching School Hub is a strategic partner.

Our Programme - has several key features:

38-week programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status, Post Graduate Certification and M Level credits worth around 30% of a Masters degree; a focus on Child Development that runs throughout the course, and which offers trainees experience in an Early Years setting, Primary School, Pupil Referral Unit, Special School and Sixth Form experience.

Our interview procedure is a rigorous process, including a panel interview, subject knowledge audit and mini teach.

Further details of the interview process will be given to those successful at the first stage of the application process.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.
