A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

We offer a rigorous and innovative, initial teacher training programme for trainees who wish to specialise in teaching children with complex learning needs and/or disabilities in the primary age phase 5-11.

You will gain significant and sustained experience in both mainstream and special schools, providing you will skills and expertise to teach in either sector at the conclusion of our programme. You will be trained by an experienced leader of special education and will gain a deep insight into the range of needs of children, statutory frameworks as well as considering how schools offer support to parents and carers. A unique experience for you as a trainee teacher.

The programme runs for a minimum of 38 weeks; you will spend four days per week in school and one day per week attending training seminars.

Your training seminars will enable you to develop your knowledge and understanding of national statutory frameworks including:

  • Primary National Curriculum
  • Assessment
  • Keeping Children Safe in Education
  • SEND Code of Practice.

Additionally, you will benefit from training linked to; theories of teaching and learning, mental health, working with children with EAL, parents etc.

Our training ensures that you will have the most up to date knowledge, based on the most recent and relevant research which underpins all of our training, ensuring that you are able to integrate current theory into your classroom on a daily basis.

Your training placements will be organised to suit your training needs, they will take place across 2 contrasting schools in KS2/KS1, which will immerse you in teaching in both the mainstream and special school sector. Quite simply, you will stand out from the crowd and be highly employable.

These training placements will enable you to develop strong knowledge, skills and competencies resulting in you being in high demand as you seek your first teaching post.

Our training programme does not assess what you ‘write about teaching’, we believe you should be assessed, doing what you do best…… teaching children in the classroom! Your progress will be monitored through:

  • Regular assessments of your teaching and learning;
  • Regular progress targets of your teaching and learning;
  • Summative assessments at the conclusion of each placement.

Trainees selecting this route will also complete a 60 credit Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with our partner Cumbria University.

School placements

Originally established in Skelmersdale, our ITT partnership now extends to Southport, Formby, Liverpool, Ormskirk, Wigan, West Lancashire and Preston, meaning placements can suit your needs!

We also provide unique enhancement training opportunities including:

  • Teaching children with English as an Additional Language
  • Teaching children in KS3

Your placements will be intentionally diverse, they will challenge your thinking about teaching and learning, however, will enable you to learn from experts in their field, in their classroom for a sustained period of time. The critical learning for all of our trainees is to understand that your progress can be directly linked to the progress of the children in their class. If the children are making progress… then you are too!

  • Qu. What will my working hours be? Ans. Training Day 9-4.30. School Day while schools differ, most schools expect as a minimum 8.00-4.30.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:1 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

Personal qualities

We are looking for applicants with a genuine interest/experience in teaching children with SEN/D.

You may have experience with children from a range of sources e.g. work, volunteer, placement, governor in school or summer clubs, sports, cubs etc. It is not how many days you have spent with children that matters, it is what you understand about being a teacher that is of interest to us.

If you have determination, resilience, creativity and a passion for teaching, you possess the personal qualities that make superb teachers and leaders of the future. Show this at your interview!

Other requirements

All successful candidates are required to meet the following conditions of any offer by the programme start date:

  • Clear disclosure and barring service (DBS) criminal records check including children’s barred list information;
  • Clear prohibition order check;
  • Clear health and physical capacity to train to teach through an external occupational health check;
  • Clear criminal record checks for overseas applicants;
  • Clear criminal records checks for applicants who have lived or worked abroad for 3 months or more in the last 10 years;
  • Two professional references;
  • Develop fundamentals in Mathematics and Literacy proficiency.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

About the training provider

North West SCITT is a leading provider of school-based Initial Teacher Training, with a 100% employment rate over the last 3 years. Over the course of one intense year we nurture and challenge trainees to develop the skills to become highly effective teachers, ready to take up a teaching post in Foundation Stage, KS1, KS2 or SEN provision.

Our training programme is entirely school based and our trainee teachers spend 37 weeks in school, learning ‘on the job’, working alongside experienced teachers who mentor them through their training period.

Interview process

We intend to recruit the highest calibre of candidates and our interview process is designed to ensure that we establish your suitability and readiness to teach children with complex needs.

We are looking for candidates who are enthusiastic, well-organised, well prepared and who can demonstrate a commitment to successfully completing our School Based Initial Teacher Training Programme. Experience in the SEND sector is highly beneficial to this route. Quite simply, we are looking to recruit our ‘future colleagues and future leaders!’.

Candidates who are selected for interview, will be welcomed into one of our partner schools and will during the course of the day complete the following tasks:

  • Plan and deliver a short lesson with an allocated class;
  • Complete a subject knowledge task based on the Primary National Curriculum;
  • Engage in an individual interview to share your current experiences and aspirations for yourself as a future teacher.

As you intend to undertake postgraduate studies, we will review your potential to research and study at L7.
