A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

Our one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) prepares you to teach the secondary school science curriculum for the 11-16 age range.

You will learn how to teach sciences to GCSE and your science specialism, up to AS/A level.

To help you share your subject expertise, you’ll have many of your sessions in mixed specialism groups with fellow trainees. When you study A-Level work, you’ll usually split into specialist groups.

You’ll explore various teaching methods in our laboratories, which mirror school science classrooms. You’ll consider how to plan lessons and manage activities, how to reflect on your developing practice and how research can develop this.

And, you’ll conduct some of the experiments you might use on your placements, such as exploring the properties of electromagnets, extracting DNA from a kiwi fruit, and investigating the reactions of alkaline metals.

You’ll also have guest sessions with alumni and experts from a variety of organisations. Past sessions include speakers from the National Space Centre, Royal Society of Chemistry, and Science and Plants for Schools (SAPS).

You’ll spend a minimum of 120 days on placements in a variety of schools.

You will have the knowledge, skills and experience to teach your subject at Key Stage 3, GCSE and potentially A/AS-level.

You’ll spend a minimum of 120 days in at least two contrasting school placements as well as the opportunity for additional experience that will prepare you to excel in the classroom.

You can choose University-led or School-led routes to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Following successful completion of this course, you will achieve 60 masters level credits (one third of a masters degree) and these can contribute to future studies.

School placements

On this one-year course, you’ll spend a minimum of 120 days on placements in schools.

We know that teaching a class can be daunting, so we’ll help to prepare you before you start your placements. You’ll have a gradual introduction to teaching, observing, getting to know your pupils, classes and teachers, before teaching the classes on your own.

You’ll go to at least two contrasting mainstream secondary schools (such as a school in a rural setting or an inner-city comprehensive) or a college along with some primary school experience.

On your placements, you might experience mixed and single-gender schools, city academies, comprehensive and selective schools, 11-16, 11-18, sixth form, and further education colleges.

This variety helps you to experience different situations and further develop your practical skills as a teacher.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

You might be eligible for Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course. Please check the criteria here: https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/improve-your-subject-knowledge.

Your degree subject should be in physics or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Overseas candidates should have Cambridge Proficiency in English or IELTS Band 7 with no less than 6.0 in any element.

We do not accept the following qualifications as equivalent to GCSE: adult numeracy and literacy, functional skills or key skills.

Personal qualities

Personal Statement plays an important role in admissions process - successful candidates will demonstrate a good understanding of teaching and learning within a secondary school setting.

You may wish to evidence your understanding by drawing on related examples or experiences, such as time spent in schools or other learning settings.

Interview process

You will be expected to attend an online interview as part of the application process. Full details of your interview will be provided by email once your initial application has been approved.

Your interview will last approximately 30-40 minutes focusing on your awareness of current secondary education and your school based experience, and you will have the opportunity to:

  • Relate subject content of your education to the role of a secondary school teacher
  • Discuss your relevant experience
  • Give an account of your knowledge of the National Curriculum and what your chosen subject has to offer learners
  • Communicate effectively your insights into teaching and learning
  • Share views about the qualities of a good teacher
  • Discuss how you might teach a topic from your chosen subject area
  • Discuss principles of inclusion in education

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK for the duration of this course, you may need to apply for a Student visa.
