We will help you develop new ways of teaching maths and create stimulating learning environments using teaching methods developed in countries with high achieving maths students.
We will teach you to think outside of the box when considering how to make mathematics an interesting and relevant subject for your pupils. For example, you will be encouraged to organise external visits to help your pupils understand how maths is used in the real world and to stimulate their interest and excitement in solving mathematical problems.
You will gain substantial training in a school environment. Many of the partnership schools involved in the delivery of your course are located in and around Leeds to ensure your travelling is limited and you will have the maximum time to prepare your lessons.
An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.
Your degree subject should be in mathematics or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.
We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.
Evidence of recent experience in a UK Secondary school must have been completed prior to you making your application. Other experiences of working with children may be taken into consideration.
Satisfactory health and enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course. International applicants, those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency therefore, require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will also be required before enrolment.
Fees and financial support
The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.
In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee. However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay). We have included those essential or optional additional costs that relate to your course, below.

Carnegie School of Education has been identified as one of the leading teacher training providers in England. We are one of only 25 universities to have had their initial teacher training allocations confirmed for the next three years, an acknowledgement by the Department for Education of their excellent provision. The satisfaction of our students has advanced significantly over the course of a year, in part due to the fact that students feel as though they are joining an academic community, in which they are involved in the research work of their academic colleagues, positioning our students as co-creators of knowledge.
Work is now complete on our new Carnegie Teacher Education Building. The two storey teaching facility will be used solely by our teacher training courses and comprises a number of spaces which mimic real-life nursery and primary school settings. All the classrooms have been designed to model both primary and early-years learning environments, which will allow our teaching students to investigate the impact of the environment on learning, teaching and assessment. It will also enable the students to work with children from local schools who will be able to visit for Carnegie School of Education aspiration and project days in a cutting edge, bespoke environment.
Suitable applicants will be invited to an interview as part of the admissions process. The interview will involve a group activity and an individual interview. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about the course
