A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

This course is designed for people who would like to teach at the secondary age phase, 11 to 16. The course lasts for approximately ten months and is divided into three stages, each with the emphasis on being School Centred.

Mathematics is all around us every day. It is the tool and language of commerce, engineering and other sciences. It plays a vital, often unseen role, in many aspects of life such as transport, mobile phones and space travel. As a society it is important that young people are trained to be analytical, logical and able to solve problems. These are the skills we develop as teachers of Mathematics.

We are interested in recruiting teachers who find the subject exciting and challenging and are able to share this enthusiasm with young people. To be successful, trainees need to learn how to deliver in a style that suits their own personality but watch and learn from other teachers.

Learning in a classroom requires professionalism, organisation, planning, preparation and excellent subject knowledge, across the department. Trainees will experience lessons across a range of ages and attainment, reflecting the diverse needs of students in our schools.

You will work alongside an experienced team of Mathematicians, who are subject experts and have proven ability to ensure achievement for all students. Through the process of observation and team teaching opportunities you will develop the ability to communicate key mathematical concepts and skills.

Trainees are also supported by a school subject based Mentor and a Link Tutor from Leeds SCITT. Constant reflection allows trainees to assess their strengths and development potential, which should allow progression and confidence. You will not be the finished article but we hope this will be the beginning of a challenging and rewarding career, with sound foundations.

School placements

The first part of your training (the Lead School Experience) is based predominantly in the Lead School for your subject. This school has a specialism in your subject area and the Lead Tutors are subject experts who are also excellent teachers and trainers.

Each school has dedicated training areas so that your training consists of quality time with your tutors.

The initial training is focused on subject pedagogy:

  • How highly effective planning leads to successful outcomes in the classroom;

  • How you can ensure pupils make good progress in their learning;

  • How you can assess learning to inform next steps and strategies to support highly skilled personalisation.

You will be immersed in the school environment from week one and you will be seen as a professional by school staff, pupils and parents. This allows you to take the theory, thinking and research and implement this in the classroom, ensuring you develop your ‘teacher’ persona as quickly as possible.

The next stage of the course is called Stage A. This is a full-time placement in a partnership school with some core development days at your Lead School and Leeds Trinity University.

During this stage you will have a dedicated Subject Mentor who will observe you teach, support you with your planning and developing your subject knowledge for teaching. They will be your first port of call during this stage of training when you establish yourself in the classroom as the teacher.

The third stage of the course Stage B is a full-time placement in a contrasting partnership school, again with some core development.

In the last two weeks of the training year, you will have the opportunity to undertake an enrichment and enhancement placement or experiences. What this looks like is entirely different for each trainee as this is a time to pursue an interest- such as working in a SEND school, an additional subject, organising out of school learning and many more options!

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

If you do not already have the appropriate GCSEs, or if you are unable to provide proof of your grades, we can accept GCSE equivalency tests taken with www.equivalencytesting.com, www.astarequivalency.co.uk or Birmingham City University (BCU) www.bcu.ac.uk.

You only need to do the test if you are offered a place with us that you firmly accept. We can only accept tests from these providers and you will need to contact them directly for details on how to book and their costs.

Other requirements

Successful applicants also tend to have:

  • Advanced level qualifications (or equivalent) in Mathematics.

An offer of a place is subject to:

  • A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure Certificate
  • A satisfactory medical.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for 2022 to 2023 are as follows:

Leeds Trinity postgraduate Initial Teacher Training (ITT) tuition fees are £9,250 in 2020-21 for home students and £12,500 for EU/International applicants. Tuition fees may rise with inflation in future years.

You will not have to pay these fees upfront. Eligible UK students can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of tuition fees from the government.

UK students on non-salaried places studying full-time can apply for a package of maintenance funding from the government to help with general living costs and additional funding if you have children and/or a disability.

About the training provider

Leeds SCITT are one of the longest operating SCITTs in West Yorkshire with enviable employment rates.

We work in close partnership with Leeds Trinity University, all of our secondary teacher training courses offer both QTS and a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) (FHEQ Level 6). However, our trainees are registered to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education qualification (PGCert) (FHEQ Level 7). L6 & L7 awards are from Leeds Trinity University.

All PGCE courses with Leeds SCITT are offered in the 11-16 age range with the opportunity to experience teaching at post-16 level.

As a Leeds SCITT trainee, you will be immersed in the school environment from week one and you will be seen as a professional by school staff, pupils and parents. This allows you to take the theory, thinking and research and implement this in the classroom, ensuring you develop your ‘teacher’ persona as quickly as possible.

Our courses are divided into three main stages. The Lead School Experience is spent predominantly in your Lead School with the other trainees in your subject and this is where you will begin your teaching of classes in pairs or individually.

Stage A is when you start your first full time teaching placement in a partnership school, teaching a reduced timetable with support and guidance from your Subject Mentor.

Finally, Stage B allows you to consolidate your learning in a full time teaching placement in a different partnership school as you prepare for your first teaching job.

Interview process

If you are invited to an interview, you will receive an email from us that explains everything you need to know about your interview. This includes the date, time and the location, as well as what to prepare beforehand and what will happen on the day, so it is really important to read this email very carefully.

International students

We can sponsor Student visas, but this is not guaranteed.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.

If you register with our Disability Service at Leeds Trinity University, a member of the team will develop a Learning Support Plan tailored to your specific needs. The support within this plan could include exam adjustments, extended library loans, specialist one-to-one study skills, dyslexia screening and assessments, learning materials provided in alternative formats and alternative assessments.

With your permission, they’ll share this plan with your tutor so that they know how to best support you during your university-based training. They can also share this plan with the School Partnerships team, who are able to inform the host schools for your placements so they can discuss how to best support you during your school-based training.
