A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

The PGCE Physical Education (PE) course is an exciting teacher training route for those who are passionate about developing pupils’ enthusiasm and understanding of PE.

You will be trained by leading practitioners in the area who will support your emergence as a highly effective, research-engaged teacher. The course is designed to model dynamic, flexible and responsive teaching which you can use in your own practice. You will learn how to teach high-quality creative lessons.

You will develop practical skills that form an important part of teaching the subject. You will also develop a deeper understanding of key areas of subject knowledge in PE. The course will explore the curricular requirements associated with PE for 11-16 year olds as well as the key GCSE examinations.

The PGCE course consists of three modules designed to support the award of the PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status.

Module 1 Professional Practice This combines theory and practice in developing your subject knowledge and pedagogical skills and understanding. You will be immersed in professional studies sessions enabling you to develop holistically as a teacher.

Module 2 Reflective Teacher (Masters level) This module aims to develop your theoretical understanding of what it is to be a teacher as well as your practical skills as a reflective practitioner. This will help you to critically analyse your own teaching and grow as a teacher.

Module 3 Policy, Practice and Professionalism (Masters level) This module aims to develop your understanding of teaching as a research-informed profession and how policy and practice impact upon each other.

The PGCE course is organised in two strands: subject days and three blocks of school experience days.

You will spend subject study days at the university taught by leading practitioners in PE who are effective, research-engaged teachers. The three blocks of school experience days, spread through autumn, spring and summer terms, will be spent in schools developing practical teaching skills with the support of experienced PE mentors and teachers.

We will deliver sessions and prepare you for interviews for teaching positions in collaboration with key colleagues from partner schools.

Assessment is based on practice in schools and by written assignments on our Level 7.

Following successful completion of this course, you will receive a Postgraduate Certificate in Education leading to Qualified Teacher Status and gain 60 credits of postgraduate study. These credits can be imported into our Masters of Research course taught at the university.

School placements

You will spend a minimum of 120 days across two contrasting schools. The first placement builds confidence in teaching and planning lessons.

The second placement develops understanding and practice in assessing pupils work and the final placement consolidates knowledge, skills and understanding of pedagogy and will aim to make you increasingly independent and ready for your year as a Newly Qualified Teacher.

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in Physical Education or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Personal qualities

We explore the following areas when selecting candidates:

  • Understanding of secondary school curriculum, including the identification of area for development before and during the course;
  • Depth of subject knowledge, including understandings of the nature and methods of the discipline;
  • Enthusiasm for their specialist subject;
  • Interest in teaching and motivation for seeking entry to the profession;
  • Experiences of working with young people and what has been learned from secondary school visits;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the aims and content of the National Curriculum and
  • Experience of using ICT with areas for development identified.

About the training provider

Kingston University’s Department of Education has a strong tradition of teacher training at Kingston Hill, going back to the formation of Gypsy Hill College (1917). Our courses are located on a spacious and beautiful site on Kingston Hill, set amongst natural woodlands adjacent to Richmond Park, yet within easy access of both Kingston upon Thames and Central London. This self-contained campus, with a range of facilities, is linked to other parts of the university by a free bus service and has free onsite parking for students.

Interview process

If you meet the initial criteria of the course, you will be invited to interview. Currently these are taking place remotely via Microsoft Teams. Prior to your interview, you will be expected to complete a 5 minute video recording of a teaching segment and upload this 24 hours in advance of your interview. Further details will be provided in your interview invitation.

The online interview session can take up to 2 hours and will involve a formal interview with a subject tutor. During your interview, your awareness of current issues in secondary education; passion for teaching your subject and understanding of the National Curriculum will be explored.

Following your interview, you will be expected to complete a timed subject task as well as an English written task.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK for the duration of this course, you may need to apply for a Student visa.

To do this, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.
