A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

The Secondary PGCE programme concentrates on the teaching of 11 - 16 year olds, but part of it extends your studies/experience to cover preparation for post-16 teaching.

We welcome trainees from across the world and from the beginning work is centred on the practical skills and techniques necessary for successful language teaching.

We offer French, German and Spanish as both main and subsidiary languages. Some trainees work with all three languages, some with one language. Many sessions are generic with language specific workshops in the language you choose to work in for any given activity.

The programme seeks to identify the process of learning a second-language and critically reviews the various approaches, methods, techniques and materials used in the teaching of foreign languages within the context of secondary schools, curricula and examinations. Examples of methodology range from lively oral practice supported by interactive whiteboards, the use of new digital technology and games for beginners to the exploitation of topic-based and literary texts at sixth-form level.

In a friendly and co-operative environment, we aim to provide a stimulating, practical preparation for trainee teachers wishing to become effective and reflective practitioners. Practical work in small groups equips trainees to prepare their own teaching materials and to use a variety of teaching aids, including computers, the interactive whiteboard, tablets, video clips and reprographics.

We take applicants for the MFL Secondary PGCE programme who have studied one or any combination of French, German or Spanish for their first degree or have native or near native fluency in French, German or Spanish. We usually require the equivalent of at least 50% of a degree in MFL, which can include a year abroad. There are limited places for single linguists, who are encouraged to apply early.

Interview process

On Receipt of UCAS Teacher Training Applications The applications are checked for the appropriateness of the academic qualifications, the quality of both the content and the accuracy of written English and the extent of support provided by the referee. This is always done by the Subject Tutor. The forms will also be seen by a School Mentor, and sometimes, by the Programme Director.

Applicants must possess a degree of a British university, or equivalent and have appropriate subject knowledge. The University states that prospective applicants require a degree 2:2 or better to be able to progress on to the PGCE Secondary programme. Interviews Candidates are either called for interview individually or, more usually, in small groups. The interview is conducted by the Subject Tutor(s). The interviews are usually held in the University, but on some occasions, in a partnership school.

The interview process is informal and usually candidates are offered the opportunity to ask questions, possibly give a short presentation, complete a written task as well as participate in an individual discussion with Subject Tutors and Mentors.

After the interview Decisions about the offer of places are made immediately after the interviews and the outcomes communicated to the candidates formally through the UCAS Teacher Training System.

How school placements work

All trainees have two school placements and teach in two schools. The two periods of teaching experience are approximately 12 weeks in length. Each teaching block is preceded by a developmental phase of structured preparation. This involves observing experienced teachers working with individual pupils, working with groups of pupils, team teaching, and eventually taking responsibility for whole lessons. In their practical teaching, trainees are advised and guided by their subject mentors in schools, and observed teaching by University Method Tutors. Trainees each have a Journal and Profile Document in which they and their mentors record their development. This document is both formative and summative because you use it throughout your training and it also contains two sections for completion at the end of each major period of teaching.

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £28,000
  • a bursary of £26,000

With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £2,000 in your second, third and fourth years of teaching (£3,000 in some areas of England).

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Modern Languages (German) or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Other requirements

French Subject Knowledge Enhancement Intensive twelve-week course is designed to enable graduate linguists to learn French in order to teach it confidently to Key Stage 3 (pupils aged 11-14), and potentially beyond.

Entry and funding Applicants must have been offered a place on an Initial Teacher Training course, and completion of the SKE course must set as a condition of this offer. Applicants may also be eligible of a bursary.
