The PGCE programme is taught in partnership with secondary schools/colleges. It will prepare you for entry to the teaching profession through developing your expertise in teaching pupils aged eleven to sixteen with post-sixteen enhancement.
You will work alongside experienced teachers, developing class management skills, observing and supporting pupils’ development, becoming familiar with the school’s assessment of the curriculum and acquiring practical experience of inclusive teaching and learning within the school environment. You will develop research-informed understanding of curriculum design and have an excellent understanding of safeguarding practice.
Through lectures, seminars, practical workshops and directed study, you will develop the understanding and skills needed to plan, teach and assess. You will cover varied topics such as: diverse and inclusive curricula, chronology, enquiry, working with sources (musical, pictorial, written), interpretation and significance, cause and consequence.
The course gives high priority to developing your abilities in analysis, evaluation and autonomous learning. Placements in contrasting schools provide opportunities to develop your understanding of the teacher’s wider role.
The PGCE is awarded following satisfactory performance in relation to all the standards for Qualified Teacher Status. Evidence of success will be drawn from coursework, study tasks, and teaching competence which is demonstrated on school experience.
In addition, our PGCE offers students the opportunity to gain up to 60 Master’s level credits, with potential progression to a Master’s level degree programme.
