The PGCE programme is taught in partnership with secondary schools/colleges. It will prepare you for entry to the teaching profession through developing your expertise in teaching pupils aged eleven to sixteen with post-sixteen enhancement.
You will work alongside experienced teachers, developing class management skills, observing and supporting pupils’ development, becoming familiar with the school’s assessment of the curriculum and acquiring practical experience of inclusive teaching and learning within the school environment. You will develop research-informed understanding of curriculum design and have an excellent understanding of safeguarding practice.
Through lectures, seminars, practical workshops and directed study, you will develop the understanding and skills needed to plan, teach and assess.
By incorporating current trends and issues into our teaching, you will be prepared for the contemporary classroom. You will explore how to teach a wide a range of topics and preparation for assessment, including Core Maths. You will be supported to teach using Mastery and benefit from our links with local Mastery Champions, Maths Hub “GLOW” and the Royal Institution Maths Masterclasses.
Your subject knowledge days will be delivered in small groups and will cover broad topics throughout the year, for example: algebra, geometry and measures, number, policy and pedagogy, probability and statistics, ratio and proportion, resources and tools.
We will support you to develop your use of technology in teaching, including e-teaching and e-homework and provide detailed preparation for teaching students with SEND, including dyscalculia.
The PGCE is awarded following satisfactory performance in relation to all the standards for Qualified Teacher Status. Evidence of success will be drawn from coursework, study tasks, and teaching competence which is demonstrated on school experience.
In addition, our PGCE offers students the opportunity to gain up to 60 Master’s level credits, with potential progression to a Master’s level degree programme.
