About the course

Primary School Direct Tuition Fee funded training places are available, providing a strong focus on practical, classroom-based experience. For Tuition Fee places (course code 2BKL), you can apply for a student loan or self-fund.

The Sussex Teacher Training Partnership is led by experienced, practising teachers, and is tailored towards local training needs.

Trainees will be based in one school from the consortium – the placement school. All trainees attend central training on a weekly basis which is held within different partnership schools.

The training programme generally lasts for one academic year full-time, running from September to July. The programme provides practical, hands-on teacher training, taught by experienced, practising teachers.

Interview process

The interview would comprise of:

  • A five-minute presentation on a given topic
  • Formal questioning from the interview panel
  • An opportunity for the candidate to ask questions

How school placements work

You can train at any suitable partnership school or academy across Sussex, Brighton & Hove and Kent. There are a limited number of places available for school placements in the surrounding areas.

We will be based in one school for the majority of the training year. A second placement is offered in two adjacent key stages in two contrasting settings.

Lead partnership training schools currently include:

  • Robsack Wood Primary Academy
  • Iford and Kingston Church of England Primary School
  • Manor Primary School
  • Newick Teaching School
  • St Mark’s Teaching School
  • The Haven Voluntary Aided C E Methodist Primary School
  • Blackthorns Community Primary Academy

Fees

The course fees for UK students in 2021 to 2022 are £7,950

Financial support

You may also be eligible for a loan while you study – note that you’ll have to apply for undergraduate student finance.

Requirements

Qualifications

Before starting your training you will need:

  • GCSE minimum grade C (new grade 4) in English, maths and science or equivalent.
  • 2:2 or above bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

Personal qualities

It is helpful to gain some classroom-based experience in a primary school before starting the course. For example, this could be as a Teaching Assistant or volunteering in class for a few hours each week. By gaining this experience you will be better prepared to start the programme. Importantly it will inform you whether teaching is the right career choice for you.

About the training provider

We are committed to developing outstanding teachers, helping to close the gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers and providing opportunities for all pupils to excel.

If you have a passion for igniting the potential of children, which should be at the heart of great education, this is the programme for you!

The programme is accredited through the University of Brighton Academies Trust and is managed jointly by Lead Schools. Robsack Wood Primary Academy is the Lead training school.

Training covers the whole primary 5 - 11 age range.

We train with schools across Sussex, Brighton & Hove and Kent.

We offer both full time (one year) and part time (up to two years) programmes, leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). During your training you will train alongside experienced teaching staff, building up your teaching practice as the programme progresses.

The Sussex Teacher Training Partnership will be running virtual information events over the year ahead. Visit our website for more information or find us on Facebook and Twitter.

Training with disabilities and other needs

Sussex Teacher Training Partnership welcomes applications from all sections of the community, and recognises and values the diversity of trainees recruited to the programme including those with a disability.

We want to ensure that all the attributes, talents and skills available throughout the community are recognised and our principle is that training places should be filled by those best able to fulfil the requirements of the programme.

With partnership schools, the programme will support with adjustments to training to assist trainees with a disability.
