PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
Our 38-week, full-time PGCE Primary (specialising in Key Stage 2 with Primary Languages - German) programme will prepare you to become a general class teacher in the age range 5-11 years, with a specialism in teaching foreign languages.
You will undertake two main school placements – one in Lower Key Stage 2 and the other in Upper Key Stage 2, where possible. Our aim is for your placements to be in contrasting schools, to give you a breadth of school-based experience. You should also have the opportunity to practice and enhance your language teaching skills in at least one of your placements, as well as teaching across the rest of the curriculum. You will be working with children at this important stage to motivate, inspire and challenge them in their learning.
Upon successful completion of your PGCE, you will graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and 90 Master’s credits.
School placements
School experience takes place in our partnership schools across the region.
During the two extensive placements in our partnership schools, you will gain a broad range of practical teaching experience.
Our aim is for your placements to be in contrasting schools, to give you a breadth of school-based experience. You will learn to put ideas and theory into practice.
Interview process
Interviews are part of the formal selection process. You will need to present yourself well, come prepared, and dress smartly. Your interview day will include:
- An introductory talk
- An individual interview
- A written task
You may also be asked to complete other relevant tasks such as:
- Working with small groups of pupils
- Giving a presentation
- A group interview
- Literacy, numeracy and subject knowledge questions

Requirements
Qualifications
Prior to submitting your application, you will need:
- GCSE pass at grade C/4 or equivalent in English language, Mathematics and a natural Science subject (ie Biology, Chemistry, Physics or combination of these)
- A level in German (or equivalent)
- IELTS 6.5 overall with minimum of 6 each component or equivalent, if first language is not English
Prior to beginning the course, you need a good honours degree or equivalent. A degree classification of 2:2 or above is preferred. All degree subjects are considered.

Trainees are selected on the basis of their application form, references and an interview. You are encouraged to prepare thoroughly.
Application forms should demonstrate strengths in subject and curriculum knowledge, your enthusiasm and commitment to a career in teaching, and the age range for which you have applied.
Other requirements
Prior to submitting your application, we recommend you gain some observational experience in a classroom environment if possible. This will help you gain an up-to-date understanding of how classrooms are managed and how teaching and learning takes place.
Prior to commencing the course, applicants must also obtain:
- An Enhanced Criminal Records check from the Disclosure and Barring Service
- A satisfactory Health Check. All PGCE trainee teachers must meet the Secretary of State’s requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach.
