The course is generic and will prepare you to teach in the lifelong learning sector. The PGCE Further Education will allow you to teach in a number of different settings. Potential employment routes include Further Education colleges, six form colleges, adult and community learning, work-based learning and prison education and many of our previous students also go on to be employed in secondary schools.
University tutors and students will contribute to your sessions in university where your development, progress and practical teaching skills will be assessed. You will be allocated a teaching placement in a setting based on your subject specialism.
Canterbury Christ Church University has a strong partnership with schools and Further Education in Kent and Medway, and we have many partner colleges in London. Your course will be based on the latest research and you will be encouraged to reflect on how this impacts your own teaching.
You will be introduced to the principles, research and theory on which good classroom practice is based. Activities that might be included during your degree include modelling, role-play, lectures, seminars, discussion, College/educational setting visits and evaluation of classroom-based activities and resources.
You will be assessed in two main ways: academic assignments and assessment of your teaching. Each of your modules will enhance the education of your students as you will develop as a teacher. You will complete your own research projects which will help you develop as a teacher.
There are six modules which all link theory and practice:
- Introduction to teaching and learning
- Enhancing teaching and learning
- Developing English, Maths and ICT
- Reflection and Research for teaching and learning
- Curriculum design for inclusive practice
- Developing practice
Each of the modules will be assessed in different ways. You will be challenged to ask deep questions, assess uncertainty and challenge accepted teaching. Your assessments will consist of a mixture of written work and observations.
You will be taught and supported by age-specific and subject experts with extensive experience in Colleges and other educational settings. During your placement, you will be supported by a mentor. Your teaching practice will be assessed against the Professional Standards for the Further Education Sector.
You will also have access to the university’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where you will find detailed information on your academic assignments and curriculum updates.
