Our inspiring part time training programme consists of several complementary strands.
You’ll learn about educational theory during Year 1 of the course in weekly seminars at our base in Wickford, Essex. You’ll engage with the latest research about how students learn, how to help them overcome disadvantage, and how to motivate and engage them. You’ll also cover practical aspects of teaching like using ICT, managing workload and voice care. Your legal responsibilities relating to safeguarding students are also covered in Year 1. In Year 2 these seminars are replaced by weekly one-to-one tutorials with your Course Tutor or Specialist Mentor.
You’ll also have a weekly seminar in Year 1 led by one of our specialist Mathematics mentors. With them you’ll find out what students are expected to learn in Mathematics, how to develop in pupils an intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for mathematics, and how to develop skills in explanation, narrative, questioning, intervention and presentation that enable students to engage with mathematical concepts.
You’ll spend two days a week or equivalent in Year 1 and three days a week in Year 2 working in school, gaining hands-on experience and putting your knowledge of theory into practice with the support of a specialist mentor. You’ll start by watching expert teachers and gradually build skills and confidence. Once you start teaching, your lessons will be observed and you’ll have opportunities to discuss them. Your fortnightly meeting with your mentor will be an opportunity to highlight your achievements and plan your next steps.
You’ll read widely, prepare written tasks and presentations in Year 1 and complete a reflective journal in Year 2. We ensure assignments are evenly spread throughout the course and our weekly newsletter reminds you of deadlines. We operate an ‘open door’ policy so you can discuss any concerns.
In Year 2, you can also choose to study for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) supported by lectures at our Wickford base. You submit two 5000 word assignments, one on Special Educational Needs and one on your own research. Validated by University of Suffolk the PGCE is worth 60 Master’s credits.
During the course we’ll use observations of your teaching, your assignments and reflections to continuously assess your progress. There is a formal review at the end of each term, with the final assessment for recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status taking place in the third term of Year Two.
