A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

This course gives you the opportunity to gain a flying start to your teaching career by gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) but rather than specialising in the Early Years or general Primary phases, you will be able to highlight your expertise in Physical Education with five to 11-year-olds. This will be linked closely to our Core Curriculum Framework.

While the PGCE is an academic qualification, the emphasis is very much on practical experience, with around two thirds (120 days) of the course spent in school. While on the course you would have school-based training in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

School-based training will include schools recognised for their strengths in physical education, allowing you to immerse yourself in this specialist area. In addition, you will choose physical education as your area of leadership to explore at a deeper level when you are completing academic work for your Professional Studies and Leadership module with a view to you leading the subject in the future.

You will learn to teach across the whole range of subjects in the primary National Curriculum, with a strong focus on core subjects. The course is taught by experienced practitioners, all of whom have been exceptional teachers and senior managers within schools.

All aspects of the PGCE, including your school experience placement of 120 days, will be linked closely to the BCU Core Curriculum Framework.

School placements

You will spend at least 120 days – working in two schools on block placement gaining valuable breadth of real-life experience. You will gain direct teaching experience and work with experienced teachers in the classroom.

School placements are predominantly in West Midlands primary schools. You will be assigned a trained mentor/ class teacher and a university tutor while on placement, who will support and guide your work, as well as provide training and feedback.

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

Other requirements

Applicants must meet the Department for Education’s Initial Teacher Training criteria, which means being medically fit, successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and satisfying any other safeguarding check required for your course.

While not essential, you may wish to gain some school experience before attending interview.

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

Interview process

You will be required to attend one online interview. Interviews include:

  • exploration of curriculum knowledge during the 1 to 1 interview

  • discussions about relevant experiences with your interviewer.

  • a discussion on an education related topic that you have prepared.

  • a reflective written task.

We also look for:

  • good communication skills

  • potential / suitability to be a good teacher

  • robustness to cope with the demands of the course

International students

We can sponsor Student visas, but this is not guaranteed.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.

Training with disabilities and other needs
