About the course

Our four key principles of collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and care form the foundation of our practice and partnership. They are interwoven through all aspects of our curriculum and across university and school training and will be recognisable to you during your time with us. Through a carefully designed and sequenced curriculum, and with the expertise, advice and support of both university and school trainers, you will become a well-qualified and highly skilled teacher.

Three overarching themes span across the Initial Teacher Education (ITE) secondary curriculum:

  • The Teacher as a professional
  • The Teacher for a diverse society
  • The Teacher as researcher

Our sequenced and integrated ITE curriculum is made up of the core and subject curricula which covers a range of secondary subjects. Throughout all four phases of the programme you will gain, apply and refine your knowledge of teaching, pedagogy and classroom skills.

As part of your academic award you will undertake assignments which will contribute 60 credits towards a Masters award. These assignments are informed by the relevant research literature and theories that will complement and enrich your professional practice.

Throughout the programme, we will closely monitor and support your progress. You will be assigned a subject tutor at the university who is also your Academic Tutor who will regularly meet with you to discuss and review your progress. During school phases of the programme you will also be supported by a Training Mentor who will support and review your progress in understanding and learning the ITE curriculum.

As a Bath Spa Teacher, you will be supported to develop professional behaviours, emotional resilience and encouraged to think critically about research, national initiatives and classroom practice. By the end of the programme you will become creative practitioners, critical thinkers, collaborative colleagues and professional teachers who care for and nurture the learners they teach.

We regularly seek and respond to feedback from our trainees and schools to continually improve the programme and ensure we are at the forefront of the latest research and practice into teaching and learning and that your professional needs are met.

A personalised process of continuous assessment ensures that learning is appropriate and effective. There are five progress review points throughout the PGCE year, which take the form of individual tutorials with your Academic Tutor to monitor your progress and set individual targets for the next phase of training.

How school placements work

Bath Spa University Partnership: our partnership of schools span the South West region, and beyond. Each year we work closely with over 250 partnership schools to ensure you get the very best training experience.

Bath Spa Teachers (BSTs): The Partnership believes that from the start of your journey to be a well-educated and highly skilled teacher you are a ‘professional teacher in training’. In recognition of this, you will hold the identity of a Bath Spa Teacher (BST), rather than a trainee. You will embrace the professional qualities and attributes expected of a professional teacher, and colleagues who train you will respect this status.
