About the course

One of the main characteristics of the Basingstoke Alliance SCITT Programme is its focus on the individual needs of the trainee. We use instructional coaching methodology to provide constant supportive training that maximises the progress of the trainees. The trainee will be allocated a personal mentor (fully trained by BASCITT) who will support them all the way through their placements.

The SCITT Director and Subject Board Tutors will support trainees and mentors. Trainees and mentors will organise teaching and school-based input to ensure a balanced timetable; this will be done at the beginning of the training to ensure the trainee fulfils all the requirements in terms of coverage.

Trainees are required to attend a course of central training, which complements the school-based training. The dates of central training will be built into the trainee’s calendar for the year. The Professional Development Record (PDR) is designed to help trainees to plan the training; it is completed every week, identifying foci of thinking and work for the coming days.

School placements

The BASCITT placements are carefully planned and consideration is given to individual trainees, placement schools and staffing.

  • A Main School Teaching Placement – Autumn Term – KS3/4
  • A Second School Placement – Spring Term 1 – KS3/4
  • A Diversity Placement looking at Transition and other Government priorities – Spring Term 2 – KS2 and KS5
  • Main School teaching and Assessment period – Summer Term

Age ranges taught are 11-16 years

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

We will accept equivalency tests from a third party which may be subject to an additional cost. Please contact us directly to discuss which providers we will accept an equivalency test from.

Personal qualities

The BASCITT are looking for applicants who are passionate about wanting to make a difference to the lives of the pupils they teach. We are also looking for individuals who are passionate about their subject so you can inspire the next generation.
Furthermore, we are looking for commitment, enthusiasm and professionalism.

Other requirements

  • School experience is recommended prior to the course start, however, this is not a condition.

  • Ability to travel between different training locations within the partnership schools.

  • A completed self-declaration health questionnaire.

  • Attendance at induction days prior to course start.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

We educate the ‘whole trainee’ to educate all children through the development of highly professional and reflective teachers who are fully versed in practical experience, underpinned by relevant educational research and theory.

Partnership school’s professional themes programmes provide trainees with an opportunity to develop their knowledge and application of SEN.

Interview process

Once we receive an application your application will be acknowledged and reviewed by the BASCITT Management Committee. If you are successfully offered an interview you will be invited to attend one of our pre-scheduled dates hosted by a partnership school that will consist of;

Programme Overview Compliancy Audit Subject Knowledge Audit School Tour and Observational Task Micro Teach Formal Interview

Interviews are led by the Programme Director and supported by a partnership school SCITT Co-ordinator (professional mentor), Subject Specialist and Programme Administrator.

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.

Training with disabilities and other needs

We are mindful of equality and diversity and support our own trainees with specific needs. We have systems and processes in place to support trainees with for example dyslexia, dyspraxia, mental health as well as physical conditions. A strength of our provider is how we treat trainees as individuals and will provide excellent support to ensure their success.
