A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

All Geography course participants undertake areas of study in: Learning, Teaching and Assessment in Geography: The OAKS course is built upon Geography in the National Curriculum, the Teachers’ Standards for the award of QTS and the needs of you, the pupils and schools. Geography sessions will essentially look at ways of teaching Geography content through the 11-18 age range. Typical topics for Geography sessions include:

o The use of Geographical Enquiry to structure a Geography curriculum o The use of thinking skills and learner led learning techniques to structure Geography lessons. The importance of effective assessment to measure progress within a Geography curriculum and inform future planning. o The appropriate use of technology (including GIS, iPADs, IWB) to enhance learning. o The teaching of controversial topics such as migration, conflict and climate change. o The planning and execution of fieldwork with all key stages including effective risk assessment. o The teaching of contemporary Geographical topics such as Energy Security and 21st-century Geopolitics. o Effective teaching of data presentation and analysis across all key stages.

An important part of the course is learning how to create a stimulating and caring environment. To help create such an environment, you need to be enthusiastic and lessons need to be well planned and related to the needs of pupils. They need to be conducted in a well-organised way with a positive approach to control. You will be able to prepare in advance for handling different situations since strategies for maintaining discipline and managing the learning in a Geography environment are considered and discussed.

You will be encouraged to make use of Digital Technologies. We also place emphasis on the development of your skills in Digital Technologies (both personal and professional) and provide a wealth of opportunities for you to become a highly competent, skilled technology user.

These sessions are delivered by a Geography Subject Experts at The OAKS at Keele and in schools, therefore you are required to travel to Stafford for the delivery of some of these sessions.

School placements

We will send you to two secondary schools where you will receive an 11-16 experience; the length of time spent in both of these placements is the same. Hopefully they will give you two very different experiences; one maybe in a small town or rural setting the other could be in an inner city. We make sure that you also receive a pre and post phase enhancement so you will be placed in a primary school for one week and gain experience in a post-16 environment (possibly in one of your secondary placements). We are very proud of our alternative education placements that we arrange for you on our programme. Hopefully you will gain experience in an EAL school, pupil referral unit (PRU), special school and maybe an independent school.

Travel to and from your placements is always a key concern and we make every effort to make sure that you can easily commute to your schools. We have a very large partnership in over five counties; one will have schools close to you. We guarantee that you will never have to travel more than 75 minutes. In fact, most of our trainees travel well under an hour to their teaching experiences. When we visit our EAL schools we put on mini buses so nothing could be simpler.

Many of you will have applied to one of our 6 hubs (geographical zones); this usually dictates the schools that you will be placed in. Through evaluations all of our partnership schools are deemed to be at least “very good training experiences” for our trainee teachers. We train and then monitor all of our school based mentors and the quality of our school’s provision annually; so rest assured that you will have a good teaching experience with us at the OAKS.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

The OAKS offers candidates the opportunity to train and develop as a subject specialist. A minimum of 40% of the credits gained in your degree must be directly related to the subject you wish to train to teach.

Your degree subject should be in Geography or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

The OAKS offers candidates the opportunity to sit our GCSE equivalence tests in English Language and Mathematics prior to entry.

Other requirements

1) a medical report which is deemed satisfactory; 2) a completed DBS Enhanced Disclosure which is deemed satisfactory by The OAKS; 3) successful completion of a minimum of 10 days teaching experience in a secondary school/college during the last two years. This could be either before or after selection (undertaking this before the selection process commences will strengthen your application).

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

With The OAKS there is a pre-course fee which covers

  • Enhanced DBS check
  • Fitness to teach health assessment
  • Purchasing of Bristol Guide - Handbook for Educational Professionals (reduced cost from The OAKS)
  • Residential trip

In 2021/22 the total price for the above was £115, at this moment in time we are unable to confirm the price for 2022/23, but do not foresee this increasing dramatically.

There is also a possibility of undertaking a First Aid course and / or a P4C (Philosophy for Children) course, these are optional and may incur an additional fee.

About the accredited body

We are The OAKS (Ormiston and Keele SCITT), an Ofsted Outstanding Secondary Initial Teacher Training provider based at Keele University in Newcastle-under-Lyme, North Staffordshire.

Ours is an innovative and intensive one year course during which trainees will complete both the Teaching Standards, gaining QTS certification and obtain a Keele University PGCE at either level 6 or 7. We believe that we provide a course that is both supportive and enjoyable, with outstanding success rates well above the national average for the Initial Teacher Training sector.

Interview process

Our selection process is a two way process where you can find out if the OAKS is the training programme for you and we can decide if you can potentially become a good/outstanding secondary teacher. We carry out our interviews in one of our partnership schools, where you will be expected to teach either a class or a small group of their students for 15 minutes. The students give us feedback on your lesson, which we share with you during a formal interview. This focuses on your lesson, your subject knowledge and your commitment to teach. There are also written tasks for you to complete; these include a written subject specific activity and a generic writing task. The whole process should take no more than half a day at the school. You are interviewed by partnership school staff and OAKS tutors, who will talk through the programme and school placements. There will always be plenty of time for you to ask questions and the decision as to whether you are accepted on to the course is usually made on the same day (this may vary depending on the subject/time of year).

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

We have a dedicated Support Tutor, who supports our trainees with a disability or any other need. It is important to state that they do not assess your teaching performance. This gives you the opportunity to speak honestly about your needs, but also enables the Support Tutor to have the freedom to help you and visit you; whether you are in placement school or here at The OAKS. This support includes signposting to services who can help you, through to developing individualised learning plans which may extend beyond the course date to enable you to successfully complete the programme.
