About the course

The MFL training route at Reach takes advantage of the evidence-based, distinctive and excellent practice embedded in the school. In particular, in offers high quality instructional coaching, a sophisticated approach to building relationships and fostering an excellent classroom culture, along with training that prepares teachers to deliver a rigorous, knowledge-rich curriculum.

Trainees will spend four days a week in school, working with a class alongside an experienced mentor-teacher. They will then access a full day of training weekly delivered within the partnership and building on the experience they are having in the classroom. Features include:

  • Exceptional training around the essentials of teaching French and Spanish, leveraging a department which has delivered excellent results since the school opened;
  • Opportunity to build skills in a range of high leverage teaching practices using an innovative practice-based model;
  • The opportunity to learn from the school’s exceptional Primary practice, including developing understanding of, and the ability to support, pupils who’s reading, writing and Maths is below the expected standard on entry to Secondary school;
  • Support with planning and lesson design to create strong mental models around planning and preparation which will support the trainee throughout their career; and
  • An introduction to the school’s innovative approach to community partnership, working with parents and the wider community through the Reach Children’s Hub.

Interview process

Applicants will go through the following process:

  • A telephone screen to explore background and fit;
  • An assessment centre which will include teaching a short lesson to a small group of pupils;
  • An interview with senior staff; and
  • A written task.

The day will include an opportunity to get a flavour of the school and explore whether it is the right fit for the trainee teacher.

How school placements work

Trainees will be based in the lead school, Reach Academy Feltham, for five of the six half terms. They will work alongside an experienced mentor teacher.

They will work across Key Stage 3 and 4 and will build up their teaching through the year. There will be an opportunity to work with 6th Form pupils taking French or Spanish A-level as well.

They will spend half a term in a contrasting school where they will be supported to teach a range of lessons. They will be visited by their mentor during that placement.


Trainees are paid at point 3 on the unqualified teacher pay scale for outer London (currently £22,470). There are no fees or other costs.

Financial support

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.

To become a trainee teacher in England, candidates must satisfy the below national criteria. Please ensure that you meet the below conditions before applying.

Candidates must:

  • Have a grade C or above in Maths and English language GCSE;
  • Hold (or will hold) an undergraduate Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent);
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK;

Other requirements

DBS and medical clearance is required prior to commencement of the course. This is obtained through Reach Academy Feltham.

About the training provider

Reach Academy Feltham is an all-through school serving pupils aged 2-18 in South West London. The vision of the school is to support our pupils to develop the skills, attitudes and academic qualifications to live lives of choice and opportunity. The school is 30 minutes from Waterloo in the borough of Hounslow.

Our School Direct programme is delivered in partnership with Kingston University.

Reach opened in 2012 and has quickly developed an excellent reputation. It was judged outstanding in 2014 and has achieved strong results across the board, including the 16th best GCSE results in the country in 2017.

The school has a strong track record of training and developing teachers. We have trained more than 40 teachers via Schools Direct, Now Teach, Researchers in Schools and the Teach First route in Primary and Secondary and across a range of subjects.

The school has particular expertise in curriculum design - more than 100 schools around the country subscribe to use our History and Geography curriculum - and community engagement - we work closely with families and the wider community.

Instructional coaching is a strong feature of working at Reach. Every teacher and leader receives weekly coaching on their teaching and this is strong element of the training programme. We will support trainees to quickly become highly effective teachers!

In addition the school has developed an innovative cradle to career model to support the whole community. The Reach Children’s Hub offers expertise in working with parents and the community.
