A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Course summary

Our SCITT training route provides all trainees with a blend of school experience underpinned by an innovative and thorough taught programme, leading to the award of QTS and a PGCE, with our partners Leicester University. This brings 60 masters credits. Sessions on campus give you academic underpinning to your teaching practice, with two assignments that weave into your experience in school.

The taught programme is delivered by outstanding practitioners, who work as teachers in our schools and as leaders of their subjects for the partnership. This includes English, Maths, Science, Teaching & Learning, Inclusion, Behaviour, Cognitive Science and the Foundation Subjects – all up to date theory and practice that is being used with high impact in our schools now. As practising teachers who also guide other schools, our trainers have a wealth of current experience and ideas that you can use. The taught days, alongside a range of fun and immersive opportunities, including our residential, will ensure that you remain motivated throughout the programme and driven to become an exceptional teacher:

Your progress across the course is supported and monitored by our highly experienced Professional Tutor team, who will give both pastoral and developmental support over the year, ensuring that you are able to make the most of all elements of the course.

School placements

Your time in school is the largest part of the training and that in which you apply learning from the other strands. School placements are not just about being in class – you will be part of the school team, taking a full part in the life of the school and making a real difference to the experiences and outcomes for the children in your care.

This course will require you working in two contrasting schools across our local partnership. We call these placements your host and your alternative school. You will complete your placement at your host school in the Autumn and Summer term, whilst your alternative placement will be completed in the Spring term. With each placement, you will change year group to cover these 3 age phases: Year 1 and 2; Year 3 and 4; Year 5 and 6, ensuring you gain a variety of experience so you can work out where you would like to be when you qualify as a teacher.

In each placement you will work in partnership with a Class Mentor, to the advantage of the children, planning and reviewing together. Your class mentor will give you on-going advice and support as well as modelling good practice.

Your professional progress will be formally supported by an experienced teacher in school – your Learning Coach, who will observe and meet with you regularly.

Your Professional Tutor will work closely with your host school and make visits during the placements.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

Personal qualities

At Inspiring Leaders Teacher Training we are looking for 6 key qualities (named iL6) in our trainee teachers. These key qualities are what we think you will need in order to help you become an outstanding teacher and future leader. To be: resilient, reflective, creative, knowledgeable, emotionally intelligent and professional.

We are looking for candidates that have a good awareness of current educational issues and have a deep understanding and open mind about how they affect children and schools.

Please be aware that the welfare of our children is our highest priority, and all offers of training places are subject to DBS, identity and reference checks.

Inspiring Leaders Teacher Training (ILTT), is an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rated School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) provider, formed by Teaching School Hubs and Trusts across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland. These particular Derbyshire based Primary courses are led by Flying High Futures with partners at Potentia Teaching School Hub, Redhill Teaching Hub and Djanogoly Learning Trust. Interview process

Selecting the right people to train with us in our schools is of utmost importance.

Our interviews take place within our schools and we aim to make you feel relaxed enough to show us who you really are.

The interview includes:

  • an opportunity to find out more about us
  • a formal interview in which we find out more about you and establish whether you are suitable to train with us and in our schools;
  • A lesson that you will pre-plan and deliver to a small group of children (Full details are provided prior to the interview)
  • Safeguarding & identity checks.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.
