The course is full time and runs from September until the end of June. The course is made up of General Professional Studies sessions, the Subject Specialism Programme and PGCE modules. It will also involve 2 teaching placements; the first runs from September until the middle of December. The second placement runs from January until June. There will also be an Enhancement Programme which has been put together to give trainees a range of experiences. By completing the visits, the trainees will gain a better understanding of a range of educational settings.
All trainees must demonstrate that they can fully meet each of the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status by the end of the course. Trainees will be continually assessed through lesson observations and placement reports whilst on teaching placements. Detailed portfolios of evidence are submitted 3 times during the year to demonstrate how trainees are meeting the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status. Following the first 2 submissions, trainees receive feedback on their progress.
The PGCE is accredited by Northumbria University and assessed through 3 written assignments. The PGCE training modules will be held at The Work Place in Newton Aycliffe.
If a trainee does not meet the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status, but has passed the PGCE modules, the credits can still be used towards a MA programme.
Sacred Heard Secondary School will work with Durham SCITT to offer teacher training placements in Redcar and Cleveland.

Health Check Before being accepted onto the course, all trainee teachers must satisfy the DfE requirements with regards to fitness to teach. You will be asked to complete a confidential self certified Health questionnaire, and if appropriate, an Occupational Health Advisor may request to see you for a more formal medical examination.
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) provides employers and other authorised organisations with details of an individual’s convictions, cautions, police reprimands and warnings held on the Police National Computer.

The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.

Sacred Heart is working in partnership with Durham SCITT to offer teacher training in Redcar and Cleveland.
Durham SCITT has been training teachers since 2005. It’s the personal attention we give to our trainees which makes this a great place to learn. We pride ourselves on the personal approach. We know there is no such thing as a “typical trainee” so we don’t provide a one-size-fits-all course. We will help you to grow and become a great teacher. Our secondary Subject Specialist programme (SSP) was recognised by Ofsted as outstanding and highly innovative practice.
Secondary trainees will have the opportunity to gain experience in 11-16/11-18 comprehensive schools/academies; special schools (EBD); a school with BESD status; Sixth Form colleges and primary schools. Trainees undertake substantial placements in at least 2 Partnership Schools. On each main placement you will be allocated a Subject Tutor and a School Tutor who will support and guide you through the school based training.
All trainees have access to our purpose built learning centre in Newton Aycliffe. High quality trainees, impressive employment rates and effective partnerships with schools, mean we are in the position to offer outstanding teacher training.
The first thing we look at is your application form and your references to decide whether or not we should invite you for interview. It is, therefore, important to include all the relevant information on the form to help us make this decision.
If you are invited to interview and have a disability, please let the Course Administrator know in advance if there are any special arrangements that should be made for the interview process, for example large print copies of documentation, additional time for reading or wheelchair access to the interview rooms.
You will be sent information about a 15 minute subject specific teaching task. The activity should be devised to be appropriate for a group of Year 10 (14 - 15) students. The interview panel will then ask you several questions to establish your motivation for wanting to teach in your chosen subject area and some administration questions. There will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions about the course. During the interview process there will be a literacy and numeracy activity to complete.
The formal interview panel will be made up of a subject specialist and one of the SCITT Directors.

Corazon Health Service provides an assessment and advisory service on the occupational health aspects of trainees. As part of the recruitment process, you will be required to complete a health questionnaire and, if any needs are identified, will be followed up. Any necessary recommendations will be put in place.
