PGCE with QTS

A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

This course is supported by University of Warwick and prepares you to teach Modern Languages to pupils aged 11 to 18. You should consider this course if you want to contribute to young people’s development by enabling them to acquire a knowledge base in Modern Languages as well as the skills associated with practical aspects of the subject.

On a personal level, you will develop a professional understanding of current issues in education along with the ability to effectively communicate and reflect upon your teaching.

Our aim is to produce confident, imaginative and successful Modern Languages teachers.

You will be taught and supported by highly experienced teams who have a national reputation for the quality of their training.

School placements

You will work within the Creative Education Trust at one of our secondary schools in Coventry, Northamptonshire or Milton Keynes.

The School Direct route offers trainees an extended Professional Practice placement in one main school, supplemented by an additional placement (half a term) in a contrasting school.

This ensures a varied and balanced experience of teaching in different settings, whilst allowing you to contribute significantly to the life of your main school.

We ensure you have access to the best and most inspiring, practising teachers and mentors. You will have opportunities to observe the best classroom practice and your individual needs will be met through mentoring.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Should your degree not be in the subject for which you are applying to teach, you will require a minimum of a Grade C at A level in that subject in order to meet the requirement for recommendation to a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

You may be asked to complete University of Warwick equivalency tests.

Books are recommended but there is no requirement to purchase specific texts and you have access to the University of Warwick library.

About the accredited body

The qualification gained on our School Direct programme is the same University of Warwick, Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) as that gained by students on the more traditional University-led teacher training programme and has judged to be “Outstanding” by Ofsted (2015) The University of Warwick has been placed 6th in the UK by the Guardian University Guide 2022 and has been named by the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022 as the University of the year for Teaching Quality.

Interview process

Candidates will receive details of their interview directly from the school. Interviews typically consist of:

  • A short lesson on a topic relevant to the class group selected (details will be provided on invitation to interview).
  • A short test to assess the candidates competency to process data and ability to work to the level expected for PGCE.
  • An interview with the Head of Department & the Lead ITT Mentor

International students

We can sponsor Student visas, but this is not guaranteed.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.
