This course is designed to enable you to become a successful teacher of Mathematics. Culcheth Campus, in partnership with Alliance For Learning SCITT offers trainees the opportunity to work with outstanding teachers and experienced practitioners from day one of the course. Over 150 days of the course will be spent in schools working alongside highly professional and well qualified colleagues. Specific subject knowledge training and audits will enable you to build up a strong knowledge of the biology curriculum for Key stage 3 and 4. Trainee timetables are designed to increase in size and complexity over the training year, but trainees are supported at all times to ensure a balance between challenge and support is met.
All trainees gain experience of both key stage 2 (upper primary) and Key stage 5 (post 16).
Trainees are assessed through their mentor and and the wider partnership team at Culcheth Campus and Alliance For Learning. Observations of teaching form a large portion of the assessment process, with a range of opportunities for trainees to reflect on their progress against the teachers’ standards (2012). Trainees reflect on a weekly basis, culminating in termly written reports produced jointly with mentors. This process is summarised through a moderation interview at the end of the course. Trainees are supported on this journey through a series of school based tasks to enable a thorough understanding of the teachers’ standards.
Throughout the course trainees receive face to face training in pedagogy and subject knowledge. This training is delivered by current practitioners and takes an evidence-informed approach to teaching and learning, enabling trainees to adapt their own learning for the context of their placement schools. Whilst the majority of training takes place at Culcheth High School and Altringham Grammar School for Girls, some training will take place in partner schools across Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
Applicants undertaking the PGCE programme are expected to complete four written assignments leading to 60 M level credits.
