Course summary

Our School Direct (salaried) programme is tailored to meet the needs of applicants who:

  • would like to earn a salary whilst training
  • have substantial career experience

The Roseland Trust, in collaboration with Cornwall SCITT, aims to recruit high-quality professionals to the teaching profession, providing high quality training, which is robust, innovative and is informed by latest research to meet the needs of our locality. This is a flexible route for those with previous workplace experience who wish to teach English in secondary schools.

This is an employment-based route so you will be employed in a school whilst you train.

The School Direct (salaried) programme is intended for high quality career changers. There is an expectation that applicants for the School Direct (salaried) pathway will have a good first degree and must demonstrate substantial career experience. ‘Trainees’ on the School Direct (salaried) route are not expected to teach more than 90% of a qualified teacher’s workload and will receive structured training during the programme. This will include self-study using online materials. The ‘trainee’ will have the same rights and responsibilities as a teacher.

On successful completion you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It is possible that in some school trainees will also be able to work for the award of PGCE.

School placements

The Roseland Academy is part of The Roseland Trust (TRT) which includes two primary schools and three secondary schools in different geographical locations. The Roseland Academy collaborates with Cornwall SCITT in partnership with more than 25 secondary schools in Cornwall, including a Special School Trust and Alternative Provision Multi-Academy Trust. At interview, the panel will discuss your placement needs and identify suitable placements accordingly. We aim to place trainees within 30-40 minutes of their home, but occasionally this can take longer, especially for those living in more rural areas.
As part of following the salaried route, the trainees will experience two school placements: having their placement in their school where they are employed and have their second placement within the Partnership. Placements will focus on the 11-16 age range, but post-16 experience can be gained either through sixth form participation in of a secondary school, or an arranged short placement in a tertiary College. Your school placements will develop sequentially from 4-days per week to 5 as the terms and training year progress. This allows you to embed theory and practice in a measured and manageable way, and develop in confidence as you progress towards your final assessment and, moving forwards, your first employed post. We are safer keeping it to a broad-brush description at the moment, as the fine detail structure of the course may need to be tweaked again next year once we gather feedback from all the stakeholders.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Degree qualification must be English Language or Literature based.

Your degree subject should be in English or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

Other requirements

As part of our commitment to safer recruitment, all successful candidates will undergo the full range of safeguarding checks, including their health & physical capacity to teach.

For those who have spent more than 5 months working or living abroad you may be required to gain a letter of good conduct or a workplace reference. We are expected to make an assessment of fundamental English and mathematics knowledge before QTS is awarded. Any work to address shortfalls in English and mathematics must be undertaken by the trainee teacher in addition to other aspects of their training.


Those following a School Direct Salaried Programme are not eligible to receive student support or a Department for Education Bursary/Scholarship.

Trainees will be employed on the Unqualified Teachers Pay Scale, and the salary is subject to employment-based deductions including National Insurance, Income Tax and Pensions contributions.

Please contact us to discuss course fees for those following this route with a QTS only outcome. Those wishing to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in addition to QTS will be charged £3,000, payable in 3 instalments.

The Roseland Academy is the highest performing school in Cornwall alongside being one of the highest non-selective state schools in the South West. It has been in the top 100 of schools nationally since 2015. The Roseland Academy achieved the designation of ‘Outstanding’ in all categories in the 2017 Ofsted inspection. The Roseland Academy is part of a Trust comprising of three secondary schools and two primary schools. The Roseland Academy is a lead school for the school direct programme and work with Cornwall SCITT as the accredited body. Your mentor will be experienced colleagues supporting you on your learning journey. You will access the Professional Studies Programme (EPS) which compliments your training course. Whilst training with TRT you will forge links with colleagues across the Trust and continue to improve your teaching skills. Interview process

All applications are reviewed by our management team prior to selection: those successful will be invited to interview. Applicants will be asked to prepare several tasks, including a pre-interview subject knowledge audit and a short written reflection on an educational topic.

All candidates will be asked to deliver a short teaching episode to an interview panel of up to three people, including a member of the management team and a subject leader, with the panel assuming the role of learners. Following the teaching episode, the interview panel will discuss the application in greater detail, including reflections on school experience gained prior to interview, subject knowledge and preparedness to enter the teaching profession. Candidates are also asked to bring a small portfolio of their design work, and samples of made products if suitable.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

Training with disabilities and other needs

The Roseland Trust (TRT) is founded on the principles of equality and inclusion. Our leadership teams, all our staff, including professional tutors and school-based mentors strive to ensure the best possible outcomes for all student teachers. Prior to the start of the course all student teachers undertake a health and physical capacity to teach check. The Roseland Trust collaborates very closely with Cornwall SCITT to maintain the equality and inclusion throughout the entire course of the training.

For those with additional learning needs, every student teacher receives bespoke support from a dedicated academic tutor who can provide support with assignment writing. Students can also access additional support through Student Finance’s Disabled Learning Allowance Scheme.

We carefully select placement schools for those with physical needs to optimise any reasonable adjustments that may be required. Mentors and subject leaders can provide support to those with visual and hearing difficulties to develop impairment-friendly strategies within the classroom.

Our personalised approach to learning allows those with mental health needs to develop their practice with support from the central management team. We offer an empathic dialogue to provide an appropriate balance of support and challenge throughout the programme.
