Avanti Schools Trust is working in partnership with Teach First to provide School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) where you will gain Qualified Teacher Status and a PGCE.
Avanti exists to help each person become a well-rounded human being through intellectual, moral and spiritual growth, and so make the world a better place. Avanti Schools support each person’s life journey along three parallel paths: Educational excellence; Character formation; and Spiritual insight.
Teach First is a charity that has been training teachers for 20 years and they are the largest Initial Teacher Training provider in the country. Their programme is rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.
Our research-led course will give you plenty of hands-on experience as you will be based in one of our schools for the year. Our curriculum focuses on supporting you to put learning into practice to have an impact on pupils during a four day a week core school placement from mid-September to July. You will have one day a week to engage in training and development to support your teaching practice, as well as a six-week placement in a different school. The programme balances developing your subject knowledge and expertise alongside giving you a deep understanding of effective teaching methods and techniques to manage your workload and wellbeing.
At the end of the programme, you will have the foundational knowledge and skills to become an effective Early Career Teacher alongside achieving a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status.
You will be based in one of our schools for the year, and we will work with you to plan the location of this school to suit your needs. You will be in the school placement four days a week and one day each week will be your allocated training day. Your training will include a mixture of online and face-to-face elements and will ensure that you develop the knowledge and skills you need to become a great teacher, gain your Qualified Teacher Status and your PGCE through a carefully sequenced curriculum developed and delivered in partnership with Teach First.
At the start of the programme in September, you will have two weeks of intensive training which will focus on the core areas of teaching such as behaviour management and lesson planning. You will have a further two weeks of intensive training later in the year.
When you are in your school placement, you will spend time with other expert teachers, observing their lessons and learning how to teach and plan lessons. You will work closely with a highly skilled and knowledgeable mentor, alongside other colleagues, who will all receive support and training from Avanti Schools Trust and Teach First. You will increase your teaching delivery time gradually over the year, building up to an 80% timetable in the summer term.
The programme includes a six-week placement in another school in the Spring term.
