You will attend centre-based training in Kilburn one day per week, with additional visits to alternative schools. Taught sessions are wide-ranging and thorough, ensuring that you have the confidence and competence to plan and teach creatively to meet the needs of all pupils. You spend 4 days per week in your base school. A second, 6 week, placement is undertaken in a contrasting setting and age phase. There is also the opportunity to apply for an enhancement placement in a SEND setting.
You will be observed teaching each week and targets set by your school based Mentor. You will also be visited by a Teaching London Link Tutor, and keep a Professional Development Portfolio with evidence of your progress. You take on increasing responsibility for planning and teaching, up to 80% by the Summer Term. To be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), your progress towards meeting the Staged Curriculum Expectations is formatively assessed at 5 review points across the year. You are summatively assessed against the Teachers’ Standards at the end of the course.
To be awarded Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), you need to pass two written assignments at Master’s Level and 10 Curriculum Learning Assessments (CLAs). Classroom-based research for the first assignment is carried out during the Autumn Term and submitted at the beginning of Spring. Classroom-based research for the second assignment is carried out during the Spring 2 term and submitted at the beginning of Summer. CLAs are a mixture of group presentations and 1000 word critical reflections.
Candidates apply to the Lead school but you could be placed in any of the schools within that partnership, in negotiation between you and the School. Second placements are selected by the Lead school and Teaching London to ensure that you have experience of a contrasting age phase and setting. We aim to ensure that trainees do not have to travel for longer than an hour to their placement schools.
Trainees will have two placements in EYFS and KS1 in mainstream schools, with the possible option of an enhancement placement in an SEND setting. Trainees spend the Autumn term, Spring 2 and the Summer term in their base school. Trainees spend Spring 1 in their second placement school (6 weeks).

Fees and financial support
The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.
Trainees are responsible for paying the £9,250 tuition fee for the course. Trainees are generally eligible for maintenance and tuition fee loans, but this should be clarified with Student Finance. In addition, you will also be eligible for other benefits such as student travel/oyster card, student discounts and exemption from paying council tax.
About the training provider
We are a school located in the heart of Hornsey and one that fully represents the rich and diverse community that we are proud to be a central part of. Families are warmly welcomed into our school and our school is one that is fully inclusive at every level, irrespective of children’s individual needs.
We are based over two sites. Church Lane site is home to our Lower Phase which is comprised of Nursery, Reception and Years 1 and 2 and the children here range from 3 to 7 years of age. Our Middle Phase (Years 3 and 4) and our Upper Phase (Years 5 and 6) are based at our Rectory Gardens site.
We have divided our school into three phases over two sites. This means we have the luxury of space (both inside and out) and can tailor provision, very carefully, to exactly the ages and stages of our children. We are able to provide a stunning physical environment for our children which enhances a curriculum which is aspirational and full of creativity.
About the accredited body

The depth and breadth of our programme enables you to gain the confidence and competence to develop into a highly skilled, responsive teacher. Exciting, interactive and rigorous centre-based sessions will inform your classroom practice, led by inspiring and experienced tutors. Your growth as a reflective practitioner is underpinned by the PGCE element, routed in school-based and current research.
Successful candidates will be invited to interview online. Interviews are conducted by the Headteachers of the school and a representative of Teaching London.
An online interview will consist of the following:
A three-four minute (pre-recorded) video of applicant sharing a children’s book/story
A four minute teaching session
A formal interview
A written English task
Successful candidates may be required to visit the school they applied to and teach a 20 minute lesson to a class.
All elements of the interview process are used to establish candidates’ suitability and potential for ITT. A conditional offer will be made following a successful interview.

Training with disabilities and other needs
Teaching London: LDBS SCITT has a degree of step-free access, but as the building was a Victorian school, we are unable to fully accommodate wheelchair access. We are always willing to discuss, and where possible, adapt to meet individual needs.
The well-being of our trainees is paramount, which is why you will be automatically enrolled into the Employee Assistance Programme with the Education Support Partnership. This provides 24/7 individual support and counselling, in addition to our in-house advice and support.
We also have experience in supporting trainees with a diagnosis of dyslexia and are able to offer specialist support on the course.
