A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

As a Computer Science trainee teacher, you will learn all the skills needed to become an expert and assured teaching professional. We will ensure that you are confident in delivering all aspects of the curriculum and whatever your discipline or subject specialism, you will be, by the end of the programme, fully equipped to successfully teach all topics and subjects to a range of abilities and key stages. You will be taught how to plan and successfully deliver engaging and creative lessons, effectively assess pupil progress, reflect on your practice and become a well-rounded teacher who engages fully in whole-school life. You will work alongside, and be mentored by, a range of expert and experienced colleagues – Subject Leads, Professional Mentors, Placement Mentors and the ITT team – who will all ensure that by the end of your training you are able to teach in any setting, in any context and in any location.

Assessment for Qualified Teacher Status will be against our curriculum, the Core Content Framework, and ultimately, the Teachers’ Standards. You will submit weekly evidence that demonstrates your progress in the classroom, as well as reflections on your training. You will also receive regular and supportive feedback on your teaching from experienced colleagues. For the PGCE element, which runs seamlessly alongside your school-based practice, you will complete two research-based university assignments; guidance and support for both QTS and PGCE will be offered throughout the year.

School placements

All of our Trust schools are detailed on our website. We have worked hard to ensure that you will complete a minimum of two contrasting placements, each designed and personalised so that you will make real progress during the year.

You will not be offered a place on our programme if we do not have a quality placement experience to offer you. We will organise and make all your placement arrangements for you. In addition to your placements, your central and subject training will focus on what excellent classroom practice looks like, whilst always ensuring that you are aware of what effective and relevant evidenced-based practice looks like.

You will be taught how to take a reflective and analytical view of your teaching and know how to make effective progress. You will work alongside, and be mentored by, a range of expert and experienced colleagues – Subject Leads, Professional Mentors, Placement Mentors and the ITT team – who will all ensure that by the end of your training you are able to teach in any setting, in any context and in any location.

You will experience and teach across two key stages. For Primary that will be Key Stages One and Two (ages 4 to 11), for Secondary that will be Key Stages Three and Four (ages 11-16) and for Secondary/Post 16 that will be Key Stages Four and Five (14-19).

You will have a minimum of two placements, one from September to Christmas and one from January to June. A third placement maybe offered as applicable and if in your best interests.

You will usually be in school three days and two mornings every week and expected to follow the timings, practices and culture of the school.

We believe that all trainees, morally, should understand where pupils have been on their educational journey so far, and where their journey may take them. As such, all trainees will experience teaching enhancements from Early Years to Year 13 and beyond.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent. This should be an honours degree (Third or above), or equivalent.

A degree in a relevant or related subject. A preference will be given to applicants with 2:2 honours degrees or above. Successful applicants must have met this requirement by 31 August. If you don’t have an undergraduate degree but do have a Masters or other higher qualification, your application will still be considered.

Having a good A level result in your chosen subject, whilst not a requirement of the course, will strengthen your application.

Your degree subject should be in computing or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

We accept equivalencies passed prior to the programme commencing through equivalencytesting.com

Plans lessons that use appropriate, imaginative and creative strategies that match the individual learning styles and needs of pupils.

Demonstrates excellent subject knowledge and is able to apply this and the appropriate learning and teaching pedagogy to support the pupils they teach.

Other requirements

Offers will be subject to an Enhanced DBS which will be organised for you. We encourage you to enrol to the DBS update service. An overseas DBS may be required for those who have spent time outside of the UK.

All applicants will be required to complete proficiency tests in English and Mathematics which will be delivered by BDAT ITT in partnership with Gorse SCITT.

About the accredited body

Over the last nine years, GORSE SCITT has trained over 1600 trainee teachers across all subjects and in both Primary and Secondary phases. Interview process

You will usually be interviewed by a senior tutor from GORSE SCITT, a Senior Leader from a BDAT school, and / or a senior member of the central BDAT ITT team.

  • You will make a short 3-5 minute presentation about why you want to teach and what you will bring to teaching; you should engage with the panel making clear why you want to be a teacher.

  • You will have a formal interview which will give you the opportunity to discuss why you want to be a teacher, what you would bring to the profession, and also show us your resilience and initiative.

  • You will be asked to complete a range of written work.

  • After your interview, we aim to let you know if you have been successful within 48 hours.

If we regard you as a strong candidate who needs further development to be ready to join our programme, we will facilitate this through our Subject Knowledge Enhancement programmes.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

Training with disabilities and other needs

We pride ourselves on the layers of support we provide for our trainees. Each week you will be mentored by a placement mentor who will support you with the planning, delivery and reflection of your lessons, as well as ensuring that you experience your placement as a colleague rather than as a trainee; we also expect our trainees to act like colleagues. You will be mentored and coached each week by a Professional Mentor who will support the development of your classroom pedagogy, and a Subject Lead who will support your subject knowledge development as well as ensuring that you are able to fully deliver your subject curriculum.
