A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

The majority of the course will be delivered by expert teachers in our alliance schools around South Cumbria. There will also be full support and academic preparation from tutors and our University programme leaders at the University of Cumbria, although most of the course will be delivered in school.

Our School Direct Programme starts early in September and involves teaching practice in school each week from Monday to Thursday, with a Conference day allocated to a Friday where you will take part in sessions hosted and delivered by outstanding classroom practitioners who currently teach in our partner schools. These sessions will be held in several of our school venues according to the best expertise available for each topic. The Conferences will range from Safeguarding, lesson planning, behaviour management, assessment and many more. Our Conference deliverers model the teaching and learning strategies which we know work in the classroom.

In addition, there will be subject pedagogy days during the year where trainees will focus on teaching Mathematics specifically. These will be delivered by a Lead Subject specialist for Mathemeatics. During the training you will be able to work with other trainees from other School Direct programmes with the University of Cumbria on your subject expertise. The programme includes opportunities where you can gain assignment support with your University Programme Leader and you will have full access to the University learning and support services throughout the course which will enable you to access library resources and assistance with your academic work. We have allocated time for Professional Reading, Subject Knowledge Enhancement sessions as necessary and Assignment Writing Days which will aid both your assignment writing and your classroom practice.

You will audit your subject knowledge for the topics you will need to teach at KS3, KS4 and KS5. Lead Subject Mentors will guide you towards great resources and you will gain IT access which will enable you to share resources with each other and school mentors.

The programme gives you a PGCE and recommendation for QTS; the PGCE is awarded by the University of Cumbria and this element of the course is taught at their Lancaster site by a university tutor. The modules perfectly compliment the training we deliver and you will gain 60 Master’s level credits.

Interview process

Applicants apply through UCAS and are short listed following reference to the entry requirements and if successful are invited for interview at one of the Dallam Teaching Alliance schools. On the morning of interview you will be taken on a tour of the school, your documentation will be reviewed including examination certificates and ID. There are four parts to the interview which generally takes place over a full morning. A written task, subject knowledge audit, short teaching task and panel interview. Pupils will be involved in the teaching task.

Doing some research about the Dallam Teaching Alliance and the University of Cumbria is good preparation and we will of course provide you with plenty of opportunities to ask questions on the day. We are looking for the potential to be an excellent trainee, someone who is ready to start training in a school setting from early September. We are also looking for potential employees in our schools.

Following the interview we update UCAS which is followed up by the University’s formal offer letter to confirm your place, if successful. There may be targeted conditions depending on assessment at interview, for example more observations in school or a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course.

How school placements work

The Dallam Teaching Alliance consists of 13 schools in total. We select our schools carefully and the vast majority have been graded Good and Outstanding by Ofsted. We pride ourselves on the strong relationships we have developed over the years and are committed to a warm welcome and a supportive environment for all. You will be training in placement schools which will provide you with a wide experience of how different pupils are taught and learn. We select placement schools very carefully to offer the best and most suitable provision possible.

You will complete placements in two partner schools. The first placement will begin early in September, an excellent time to see how expectations and routines are established at the start of the academic year. You will start with focused lesson observations across the whole school before you join your subject department and begin to plan and teach parts of lessons. After a few weeks you will be planning and delivering whole lessons, building up to approximately 7 hours per week by Christmas. A typical week involves four days in school when you will spend a great deal of time observing teachers in your subject area and around school, ultimately building up a timetable for your own teaching practice of seven hours by Christmas.

The second placement begins after Christmas in a different school which will give you a contrasting experience and broaden your professional development. Again, you will gradually increase your teaching timetable and for the last few weeks will be full time in school, teaching up to 12 hours per week at that point.

Fridays have been allocated for conference training on the key themes in education. Placements are selected for you on the basis of high quality mentoring, strong subject departments, contrasting schools and reasonable commuting distance.

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £28,000
  • a bursary of £26,000

With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £2,000 in your second, third and fourth years of teaching (£3,000 in some areas of England).

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Mathematics or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

To be eligible to apply for our School Direct Secondary route you will need the following:

UK Bachelors degree or equivalent GCSE Maths and English at grade C/4 or above Candidates require a minimum UK 2:2 or above and in a subject relevant to the secondary subject you wish to teach, but there are Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses available for shortage subjects such as Maths, Science, English, and Geography.

These requirements must be met by 31 July 2019.

Before applying we do advise you to spend some time in a Secondary school. You will be able to observe teaching in action and we can help you gain this experience in one of our partner schools or on one of our School Experience Days at Dallam School.
