Course summary

The Design and Technology course is school-led and will run in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire (UH). You will be inducted in the requirements for teaching Design and Technology within the 11-16 age range which leads to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (without PGCE). Where appropriate, opportunities to experience post-16 provision will be available across Danes Educational Trust: The Partnership.

You’ll join a partnership which is working to develop optimistic and resilient learners alongside staff who are valued and empowered through local, national and global affiliations.

The course is in line with the Core Content Framework (CCF) for Initial Teacher Training which is presented around the Teaching Standards (TS). It covers:

  • Behaviour Management - High Expectations and Managing Behaviour (TS 1 and 7)

  • Pedagogy - How Pupils Learn, Classroom Practice and Adaptive Teaching (TS 2, 4 and 5)

  • Curriculum - Subject and Curriculum knowledge (TS 3)

  • Assessment - Accurate and Productive (TS 6)

  • Professional Behaviours – Wider Professional Responsibilities and Conduct (TS 8 and PT2)

By the end of your training, you’ll be qualified to:

  • share your passion for Design and Technology

  • inspire students’ creativity and support them with their aspirations

  • develop stimulating resources which can be implemented through innovative teaching approaches

  • teach Design and Technology within the curriculum framework which meets exam requirements.

Specialist mentors will support you to use the best available evidence to provide a structured process for improving your teaching practice. Strategies will include support with in-class observations, help with critiquing teaching approaches and advice on the best ways to support pupils with their learning and wellbeing. You will be able to observe expert colleagues and will be taught how to deconstruct teaching approaches and plan and prepare well for lessons. You will also receive structured feedback so you can become a successful, proactive and independent practitioner.

School placements

This is an employment-based route. The student teacher is employed by the training school and registered as a part-time student at the University of Hertfordshire. Student teachers on this route are ineligible for training bursaries.

You will spend four days a week training in a Danes Educational Trust: The Partnership school. Training begins at the start of the calendar school year. One day per week will be assigned for university-led study (lectures, seminars and tutorials).

University-led sessions will run every week and will include lectures, seminars and workshops where active participation is encouraged. Collaboratively, you will benefit from the knowledge and expertise of a team of practising teachers who lead key sessions and support with school-based training as classroom expertise is developed.

No in-school assessments are set. Instead, you are assessed on your developing practice through observed lessons and structured feedback. A specialist mentor will be provided in school and protected time will be afforded (1 hour per week).

A Professional Mentor will quality assure the training provision and liaise directly with the university.

Our schools offer the experience of teaching across two key stages with an additional option to gain experience of post- 16 within Trust secondary schools.

You are allocated to one main school for your training year but will have the opportunity to teach in a contrasting setting for one half term (approximately 6 weeks) in order to broaden your experience. This process is managed in partnership with Trust schools and the university.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Usually we would expect the degree to have a minimum 50% content of the subject in which the applicant is applying.

Your degree subject should be in design and technology or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Equivalency tests in lieu of GCSE maths and English language will only be considered in exceptional circumstances by prior discussion with the recruitment team.

Other requirements

The university will carry out an advanced DBS check. School-based placements will commence upon receipt of this being completed. Mandatory Safeguarding training is required for all candidates seeking to work in schools as well as a compliance check for IT networks. It is highly recommended that you disclose any convictions which will appear on a DBS check. You will have the opportunity to discuss this at the interview if you wish. Trainee teachers will be paid a salary of £20,594 in line with the London fringe allowance. The contract is with the school for 1 year and there is no guarantee of employment on completion of the course.

About the training provider

Led by Louisa Leonard at St Clement Danes School and Chris Price at Chancellor’s School for Danes Educational Trust, we provide exceptional teacher training for graduates and career changers who have chosen to become teachers. In partnership with the University of Hertfordshire, we offer the School Direct, School Direct Salaried and Assessment Only routes into teaching. Mentor allocation and training is robust, drawing upon the expertise of the University of Hertfordshire and colleagues from across Danes Educational Trust: The Partnership. Colleagues at our training schools share their knowledge and good practice to ensure that trainees are well supported to develop into aspiring teachers and future leaders. We endeavour to make training exceptional and celebrate the enthusiastic contribution that trainee teachers make to our school communities. The programmes are carefully structured to allow trainees to develop the skills required to teach the subject that they are training in and to develop specific expertise for making a distinctive contribution to practice in their setting. Working in partnership with a varied set of schools across our Partnership nexus means that we offer a carefully designed programme which integrates trainees and Early Career Teachers into contrasting school settings where they can develop the ability to teach and learn collaboratively.

Interview process

Successful candidates will be expected to have some in-school experience and or relevant work history as you will be expected to teach at the start of the placement. The timetable is incremental beginning with 10 hours a week in the first term building to 16 hours per week by the end of the training period.

Interviews take place in our Danes Educational Trust: The Partnership training schools. You will be asked to plan and teach an aspect of a lesson (approximately 30 minutes) to a secondary school class. A formal panel interview will follow where you will have the chance to discuss your ideas and varied experiences with a Head of Department as well as a Lead ITT practitioner within the Trust.

Interviews will be offered to individuals and will not be group-led.

A standard written assignment will need to be completed to test all candidates’ competency in reading and writing in Standard English.

You will only need to complete one interview for any of our Danes Educational Trust: The Partnership schools.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.
