A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

Training starts in early September through to June. Carefully designed, delivered by experienced practising teachers and expert trainers to ensure your training prepares you for the needs of the modern classroom and enables you to start your teaching career equipped with the best combination of knowledge and skills. A crucial aspect of this programme is the innovative 10 day induction period which prepares you to commence your first teaching placement in mid - September.

Additionally, our programme offers:

A minimum of 6 subject knowledge sessions with a subject expert who will enable you to develop your pedagogical skills.

Weekly sessions focusing on:

  • Managing behaviour

  • How pupils learn and cognitive science

  • Assessment for learning

  • Special Educational Needs and disabilities

  • Adaptive teaching and pupil progress

  • Planning for curriculum progression

  • Managing workload and well-being

  • Developing thinking skills & use of group work

  • Metacognition

  • Literacy across the curriculum

  • Action research

  • Visit to a special school

  • Personal, Social and Health Education

  • Career progression & applying for your first teaching job

  • Preparing for your Early Career Teaching (ECT) years

Full cohort sessions are based at one of our training centres at Farlingaye High School or Kesgrave High School.

School Placements

You will spend 80% of the course in school. Once per week you will receive general professional and subject knowledge sessions.

Your teaching will build up gradually: you will start by undertaking structured observations of teachers followed by team teaching then full lesson teaching.


You will be provided with regular feedback to help you progress in your teaching skills through

  • observation of your lessons

  • assessment tasks

  • your reflections linking theory from training to your practice in the classroom.

There are three formal reviews of progress throughout your training, with the final assessment to gain Qualified Teacher Status taking place in the summer term.

Written submissions are evenly spread throughout the programme. The well being of our trainees is of the utmost importance to us. We take pride in the personalised provision we offer trainees and have a comprehensive support structure in place to to ensure all aspects of your training are successful.

PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education – 60 Master credits) lectures are held locally. Trainees undertake 3 additional assignments. Award is validated by University of Buckingham.

School placements

Your placements will be carefully selected to ensure that they give excellent but contrasting experiences whilst also considering a reasonable travelling distance from your home.

If you wish to nominate a school for one of your placements, we will be pleased to talk to the Headteacher about our programme, but we can not guarantee a request for a specific placement will be fulfilled.

We have established excellent working relationships with our Professional Tutors and School Mentors and try to match our trainees with their mentor to build strong professional relationships.

Each full-time trainee will be placed in the same school for terms 1 and 3, term 2 will be in a different school providing a contrasting school environment.Our schools comprise predominantly of comprehensive schools but include faith schools.

Each of our training programmes is for a specified age range. We strive to provide experiences at special schools, pupil referral units and alternative educational settings.

Schools experience is at the heart of our training programme. Our expert school-based mentors will provide you with an outstanding foundation on which to build your future career alongside a designated Senior Link (Professional Tutor) who will and work closely with the SCITT team to ensure that you have great input and support which allows you to develop rapidly. You will also be supported by a SCITT tutor who will monitor your progress and provide you with additional support.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

This needs to have a strong scientific or mathematical basis.

Your degree subject should be in Physics or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

EAST SCITT follow the Safer Recruitment procedures as set out in Keeping Children Safe in Education 2021 version.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) - The Disclosure and Barring Service has taken the place of the CRB check and it is a condition of all ITT courses that trainees must have a satisfactory enhanced DBS check before commencing training. Arrangements for completing DBS check applications will be explained as part of the selection and induction process.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for 2022 to 2023 are as follows:

This fee includes the PGCE element to the programme in addition to the QTS.

If you are unsure at the time of applying, whether to choose QTS only or QTS with PGCE, we recommend you apply for both programmes with us. We will discuss these options more fully with you at the interview stage. Should you choose the QTS only programme, the fee would be reduced to £8250 ( correct as at 1st October 2020).

Financial support from the training provider

You don’t have to apply for a Department of Education bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course.

You may be eligible for a  loan while you study – note that you’ll have to apply for  undergraduate student finance.

Interview process

Our recruitment and selection process is designed to allow us to make the right decisions for you as an applicant and for our placement schools.

Once we receive your application, it will be considered by a subject specialist / SCITT Tutor and the SCITT Director/Strategic Lead. If successful to the next stage, you will be invited to a Selection & Recruitment session.

The session will consist of:

  • Welcome by a member of the SCITT team

  • Document check & hand in of your pre completed subject audit form

  • Tour of the school in which the interview takes place

  • A 20 minute task with pupils

  • Formal Interview

  • Written Task (to display knowledge & understanding of your subject)

Successful candidates will be offered a place within days. An offer letter will be issued and may detail some conditions, e.g. passing your degree/ undertaking subject knowledge enhancement.

All trainees offered a place must:

  • Pass a Fitness to Teach medical assessment;

  • Undergo an enhanced DBS check and all other mandatory Safer Recruitment activities to verify their suitability to work with young people.

Covid 19 restrictions may alter the interview process, if so, you will be notified of arrangements.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.
