Qualified teacher status (QTS) allows you to teach in state schools in England and may also allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach in the EU and EEA, though this could change after 2020.

About the course

Training starts in early September 2021 through to June 2023. Carefully designed, delivered by experienced teachers to ensure it reflects the needs of the modern classroom enabling you to start your teaching career equipped with the best combination of skills and knowledge. A crucial aspect of this programme is the innovative 9 day Induction period, alongside our full time trainees preparing you for your first placement school. You will undertake most of the remaining cohort training during your first year, whilst also spending two days in school. You therefore need to commit to three days per week in year one. In year two you will generally spend three days in school and will undertake bespoke training as appropriate either as part of the part time cohort or individually.

Additionally, our programme offers:

  • Bespoke arrangements made after selection day, to discuss further your strengths and areas requiring further development, we may set you tasks / a reading list to enable you to develop relevant knowledge and skills before the course starts.

  • A minimum of 6 subject knowledge sessions with a teacher who delivers outstanding lessons enabling you to develop your pedagogical skills

Cohort sessions are based at one of our training centres at Farlingaye High School or Kesgrave High School.


Continual assessment against the Teachers’ Standards and the ITT core content through: observation of your lessons assessment tasks your reflections linking theory from workshops/reading to your practice in the classroom There are four formal reviews of progress throughout your training, final assessment to gain QTS takes place in the summer term of your second year.

Course workload

Written submissions are evenly spread throughout the programme. The wellbeing of our trainees is of utmost importance to us, we provide various options to support you.

Interview process

Our recruitment and selection process is designed to allow us to make the right decisions for you as an applicant and for our placement schools.

Once we receive your application, it will be considered by a subject specialist and SCITT lead. If successful to the next stage, you will be invited to a Selection & Recruitment day.

The day will consist of:

  • Welcome by a member of the SCITT team

  • Document check & hand in of your pre completed subject audit form

  • Tour of the school in which the interview takes place

  • A 20 minute student task (a small number of pupils who will ask you arrange of pre-prepared questions)

  • Formal Interview

  • Written Task (to display knowledge & understanding of your subject)

  • English & Maths diagnostic activities

Successful candidates will be offered a place within days. An offer letter will be issued and may detail some conditions, e.g. passing your degree/ undertaking SKE

All trainees offered a place must:

  • Pass a Fitness to Teach medical assessment;

  • Undergo an enhanced DBS check to verify their suitability to work with young people.

How school placements work

Your placements are carefully selected to ensure they give excellent but contrasting experiences whilst considering a reasonable travelling distance from your home.

We know many of our Professional Tutors and School Mentors well and try to match our trainees with their mentor to build that strong professional relationship.

As a part-time trainee, you’ll have two placement schools. Effectively, you will have 6 terms, 3 per year. Terms 1, 4, 5, 6 will be in School A and terms 2 & 3 in School B. The two schools will provide a contrasting learning environment.

Every Thursday during the first year of training you will receive general professional and subject knowledge sessions, complimented by specific bespoke training as appropriate in your second year.

You will start undertaking structured observations of teachers followed by team teaching, part lesson then full lesson teaching.

Our schools comprise predominantly of comprehensive schools but include a Church of England school.

Each of our training programmes is for a specified age range. We strive to provide experiences at special schools, pupil referral units and alternative educational settings.

Schools play such an important part in the programme, and that’s why we can provide you with an outstanding foundation on which to build your future career. You will have an expert school-based Mentor and a designated Senior Link (Professional Tutor) in each placement school and they will be trained by, and work closely with the SCITT team to ensure that you have great input and support which allows you to develop rapidly.

The course fees for 2021 to 2022 are as follows:

The fees above do NOT include PGCE . If you wish to apply for a part time QTS + PGCE programme this is possible. The QTS + PGCE only part time programme will be £11500 in total ( correct as at 01/10/2020)

Financial support

You’ll get a bursary of £7,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.

  • Minimum 2:2 honours degree from a UK university or recognised international equivalent (applicants with non-UK degrees must ensure that they have obtained the relevant equivalency statement from NARIC)

  • GCSE English and Maths, grade C/4 or above or recognised equivalent (evidence of equivalence will be required)


  • 2:1 or above in a relevant degree

  • If teaching a subject different to your degree, an A level at grade C or above in that subject is preferable

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)

The Disclosure and Barring Service has taken the place of the CRB check and it is a condition of all ITT courses that trainees must have a satisfactory enhanced DBS check before commencing training. Arrangements for completing DBS check applications will be explained as part of the selection and induction process.
