Course summary

Training starts in early September 2023 through to June 2025.

Our SCITT provides you with an ambitious, knowledge-rich curriculum which develops trainees’ knowledge, understanding and skills incrementally. Our curriculum is designed and delivered by experienced practising teachers and expert trainers to ensure your training prepares you for the needs of the modern classroom and enables you to start your teaching career equipped with the best combination of knowledge and skills.

A crucial aspect of this programme is the five-day induction period, which you attend fully, followed by four innovative intensive teaching practice weeks strategically placed throughout the programme to ensure you are not only prepared to commence your first teaching placement in mid–September, but also to enable you to have a full understanding of the four key threads of our curriculum which we consider fundamental to trainee success:

  • Managing behaviour and high expectations

  • Classroom practice and how pupils learn

  • Assessment for learning

  • Adaptive teaching.

You will receive training on the most up to date thinking for teaching across the primary subjects from experts in their field.

Weekly training sessions provide an opportunity for linking theory to practice and meeting up with your fellow trainees to share and to work collaboratively. It also provides you with the ongoing supportive relationship with the SCITT team.

Full cohort sessions are based at one of our training centres at Farlingaye High School or Kesgrave High School.

Assessment

You will be provided with regular formative feedback to help you progress in your teaching skills through:

  • observation of your lessons * assessment tasks

  • your reflections linking theory from training to your practice in the classroom.

There are three formal reviews of progress throughout your training, with the final assessment to gain Qualified Teacher Status taking place in the summer term. Written submissions are evenly spread throughout the programme.

School placements

Your placements are carefully selected to ensure they give excellent but contrasting experiences whilst considering a reasonable travelling distance from your home.

We have established excellent working relationships with our Professional Tutors and School Mentors and try to match our trainees with their mentor to build strong professional relationships.More information on our partnership schools can be found here

As a part-time trainee, you’ll have two placement schools. In Year 1, you will be exclusively at School A. In Year 2 between September and February you will undertake a placement in School B. You will then return to School A. You will have two days in your school placement during year one of the programme, whilst also attending the one day weekly full cohort training. In year two, you will have two and a half days in school, plus one afternoon studying either with the part time cohort as self study.

Our training programme is for a specified age range (11-16). We strive to provide experiences at special schools, pupil referral units and alternative educational settings.

School experience is at the heart of our training programme. Our expert school-based mentors will provide you with an outstanding foundation on which to build your future career alongside a designated Senior Link (Professional Tutor) who will be work closely with the SCITT team to ensure that you have great input and support which allows you to develop rapidly. You will also be supported by a SCITT tutor who will monitor your progress and provide with additional support.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

The degree needs to have suitable level of content in relation to the programme you are applying for.

Your degree subject should be in chemistry or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

There will be costs incurred by yourself to achieve equivalency tests. We will consider accepting equivalency tests in lieu of GCSE English or Maths (grade 4 (C) or above) on an individual basis

EAST SCITT follow the Safer Recruitment procedures as set out in Keeping Children Safe in Education 2022 version.

This includes but is not limited to:

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) - The Disclosure and Barring Service has taken the place of the CRB check and it is a condition of all ITT courses that trainees must have a satisfactory enhanced DBS check before commencing training. Arrangements for completing DBS check applications will be explained as part of the selection and induction process.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for 2023 to 2024 are as follows:

The fees above do NOT include PGCE . If you wish to apply for a part time QTS + PGCE programme this is possible. The QTS + PGCE only part time programme will be £11500 in total ( correct as at 01/10/2022)

If you are unsure at the time of applying, we recommend you apply for both programmes with us, and we will discuss these options more fully with you at the interview stage.

Financial support from the training provider

You don’t have to apply for a Department of Education bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course.

You may be eligible for a  loan while you study – note that you’ll have to apply for  undergraduate student finance.

EAST SCITT was accredited in July 2020 as a School Centred Initial Teacher Training Provider offering primary and secondary school-based initial teacher training awarding Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), with the additional option of gaining Post-Graduate Certificate in Education accredited by the University of Buckingham.

Interview process

Our recruitment and selection process is designed to allow us to make the right decisions for you as an applicant and for our placement schools.

Once we receive your application, it will be considered by the Secondary Support Lead / Subject Lead and the SCITT Director.

On the day of the interview:

  • Welcome by a member of the SCITT team
  • Document check
  • A teaching task - to deliver a 20 minute session to a small group of pupils
  • Completion of a Subject Audit Form
  • A written reflective subject task
  • An interview with panel typically comprising of the SCITT Director or Secondary Support Lead and one other expert, such as a Secondary SCITT Tutor, Subject Lead or Senior Leader from one of our partnership schools
  • Completion of a Subject Audit Form
  • A written reflective subject task
  • A chance to ask questions and a discussion about next steps.

Outcomes are advised in a timely manner through the Apply system and by telephone call and/or email. Offers are conditional offers at this stage. Unsuccessful candidates are offered feedback on their performance.

All trainees offered a place must:

  • Pass a Fitness to Teach medical assessment;
  • Undergo an enhanced DBS check and all safer recruitment processes to verify their suitability to work with young people.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.
