A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

This 3-7 Primary course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). You will train across the 3-7 age range.

As a provider we value trainee well-being, you will be supported throughout your training year. Trainees appreciate the high level of care and attention that they are given, both at the centre and when on placements (OFSTED 2022).

Our curriculum aims to ensure all trainees have the knowledge, skills, and experience to become highly employable inspirational teachers, who promote aspiration, build positive working relationships and a desire for future development.

Trainees spend four days per week on placement in our partnership schools. In addition, trainees will attend SCITT based Training one day a week.

Bespoke training is centred around subject, age phase and classroom-based practice and is designed and adapted to meet the needs of our trainees. Ofsted stated “Trainees are well prepare to teach their subject” (Ofsted 2022)

SCITT based training sessions consist of lectures, seminars, tutorials, micro-teaching environments and observations of teaching in school. This is very much a practical course, where trainees learn by doing. “In the primary phase, subject-specific training is highly effective.” Ofsted 2022

High quality training is delivered by school-based experts in a range of schools across the city of Bradford and beyond.

Our curriculum is delivered sequentially and effectively, leading to outstanding experiences for our trainees in preparation for their early career. Training delivery is supported by current research from The Centre for Applied Education Research (CAER).

Trainees are supported by expert mentors in school who: model good practice, offer guidance and support with planning and delivery and give regular feedback. Ofsted stated “mentoring if of a high standard”.

Assessment is ongoing and is carried out across both placement schools. As Ofsted stated, “leaders have designed and implemented an impressive range of strategies to ensure that trainees are assessed accurately. Leaders and mentors are then able to assess what trainees have understood and, when needed, put in extra support or training”. At the end of the course trainees will be assessed against the Teacher Standards to gain their QTS.

School placements

We carefully consider school placements for all our trainees. We match strengths as well as support needs for students. All trainees will be placed in two contrasting primary schools, ensuring students experience the cultural diversity the city offers.

100% of our 2021/22 trainees placements, located in our partnership schools, are within 10 miles of the school they applied to.

The average commute, the distance between the placement school & the school they applied to for a secondary trainee is under 2 miles.

Your training week initially involves 3 days a week in school and 2 days working on teaching pedagogy, helping you learn the skills to make you an effective teacher. As your training year progresses your timetable will increase at a pace that matches your needs.

During your training year you will visit a vast array of schools from our partnership in both Primary and Secondary schools. You will also visit specialist provision.

We operate an A B A model for our students, where trainees start in their host school, then complete an 6 week contrasting placement, then return to their host school to complete the training year.

You will work closely day to day with a trained subject-based mentor. Mentoring is of a high standard across the partnership (OFSTED 2022) To further support your academic growth and to offer pastoral support you will be assigned course a tutor to provide advice and support for the progressive development of your teaching expertise.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent. This should be an honours degree (Third or above), or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification Candidates with pending GCSEs will be considered Equivalency tests will be accepted in English or maths. If you are offered a place on our course, we will arrange any required tests on your behalf with our preferred provider. The equivalency test includes a support package to help prepare for passing the final assessment. There is a fee of approximately £150 per equivalency.

Teaching is a creative, dynamic profession which has space for innovative thinking, for people who can break free from what’s expected. We are clear that we want trainees to have a rapport with children, a passion for their subject, and to have the ambition to become excellent teachers. You will have a relentlessly positive outlook, show initiative and be good team player, ready to work hard in a challenging but wonderfully rewarding profession.

If you are successful at interview stage, you will be made an offer of a training place subject to satisfactory enhanced DBS clearance.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.

Interview process

All our trainees who are shortlisted for interview will be invited into our school or one of our partner schools. If you are asked for interview, we will provide more details about tasks you will be asked to complete.

All our interviews have the same elements:

A classroom based exercise, where you will be observed interacting with children or young people. Written tasks which are designed to assess your written communication skills; your capacity to access higher level study; and for secondary applicants, subject knowledge. Face to face interview with a panel of School Leaders.

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.
