School placements

Although you are in ‘placement’, you will be as valued and respected as any other member of the teaching and leadership team within our academy. Our School Direct course is firmly based on a residency training model in order to maximise opportunities for trainees to apply theory skills into teaching and leadership practice.

You will be placed in one of the following King’s Leadership Academies: King’s Leadership Academy Warrington - Woolston, Warrington. King’s Leadership Academy Liverpool - Dingle, Liverpool. King’s Leadership Academy Hawthornes - Bootle, Liverpool. King’s Leadership Academy Bolton – Great Lever, Bolton.

Your home school placement will be where you will spend the majority of your teacher training. You will be given weekly in school training to enhance your subject knowledge, as well as approaches to teaching. A key part of your training will be understanding and applying our ‘character through leadership’ philosophy into the daily curriculum, which underpins the Great Schools Trust ethos.

Edge Hill University will support you through a mixture of professional and ‘Pedagogy for Learning’ days at both the University and at our Lead School. Support for all academic assignments will also be provided.

You will undertake a contrasting school placement which will enable you to develop your skills further and ensure that you can adapt your teaching skills into any educational setting you choose to specialise in.

About the training provider

The Great Schools Trust is a values led Multi Academy Trust. Our motto ‘Credimus’, underpins our collective belief that a ‘great’ education must serve as a cornerstone for enhanced social and geographical mobility. We offer the same aspirational, social and cultural advantages, including the academic performance standards, of an independent education, we do so for free, without selection, and most critically, serve some of our most disadvantaged communities.

Leadership is the trust’s specialism taught to all students through a structured weekly programme of character and leadership development. The trust’s first academy, King’s Leadership Academy Warrington became the National School of Character in 2015 and is recognised globally as a leader in this field. Rated by Ofsted as Outstanding in 2019, it is home to the trust’s teaching & leadership centre, the Institute of Character and Leadership, is presently the highest performing secondary school in Cheshire and in the top 10 highest performing free schools nationally. At the heart of our outstanding outcomes is outstanding teaching, delivered in a values based, calm and purposeful ethos. We devote 2.5 hours every week to personalised CPD and leadership development for every teacher. A high expectations, research informed culture permeates every classroom where teachers are not interrupted for a single minute by low level disruption. Behaviour and professional standards in the trust’s academies are impeccable and in nine years, King’s Warrington has not issued a single fixed term exclusion, whilst attendance and punctuality standards place it in the top 10 of all schools nationally.

Interview process

We want the interview process to be a highly positive learning experience for you, where you can find out more about our academies, the training year and support programme and how we can help you to become an outstanding teacher.

Our selection centre is based at King’s Leadership Academy Warrington. We operate a values-based approach to selection and recruitment which is very much a two way process. Most importantly, you must be sure that the Great Schools Trust’s ethos and training programme is right for you, and then we must ensure that your values and character are the right fit for our organisation. The day will include a tour of the academy, interview and a delivery of a short lesson.

Prior to the interview we will also offer a series of webinars and reading materials to help you decide if teaching is for you as a career and prepare you for your application and selection day.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
