A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

Our School Direct course is firmly based on a residency training model in order to maximise opportunities for potential trainees to apply theory skills into teaching and leadership practice. You will be placed in one of the following King’s Leadership Academies: King’s Leadership Academy Warrington - Woolston, Warrington. King’s Leadership Academy Liverpool - Dingle, Liverpool. King’s Leadership Academy Hawthornes - Bootle, Liverpool. King’s Leadership Academy Bolton - Farnworth, Bolton. Your home school placement will be where you will spend the majority of your teacher training. Time will also be spent at King’s Leadership Academy Warrington venue for training supported by The University of Cumbria. Support for academic assignments will be provided through a mix of University Professional Learning Days at The university of Cumbria and sessions at our Lead School Kings Leadership Warrington.You will be given training to enhance your subject knowledge, as well as approaches to teaching. You will undertake a contrasting school placement which will enable you to develop your skills further and ensure that you can adapt your teaching skills into any educational setting you choose to go into. A key part of your training will be based on understanding Character Education which underpins the Great School Trust ethos of all of our Academies. Training will also demonstrate how the ethos applies across the curriculum. You will be fully supported in developing your skills to ensure that you are ready to lead the classroom. Although you are in placement, you will always be a valued and active member of the teaching teams within our Academies.

Interview process

Our selection process is a two way process where you can find out if The Great Schools Trust is the training programme for you and we can decide if you can potentially become a good/outstanding secondary teacher with our support. We always carry out our interviews at our King’s Leadership Academy in Warrington.

We want the interview to be a very positive experience for you where you can find out about our schools and how we can help you to become a teacher. Before the interview we will be offering a short series of webinars to help you decide if teaching is for you as a career and prepare you for your application.

How school placements work

There will be two placements throughout your course. Your home school placement and a six week alternative placement at another one of our academies.

There will be a professional mentor available to every trainee through out the course in each school setting.

You will only be required to travel to one of our multi academy trust schools in Warrington, Bolton or Central and North Liverpool.


The course fees for UK students in 2021 to 2022 are £9,000

School Direct – Non Salaried Route

On the non-salaried training route, you’re entitles to apply for a student loan to cover your costs.

there are tax free bursaries available ranging between £9,000 and £26,000 for many secondary subjects.

The bursaries are particularly generous for subjects such as mathematics, sciences, and languages - £26,000 with a further £6,000 paid to trainees in there NQT Year.

School Direct – Salaried Route Similar to the Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship, you’ll have the opportunity to earn a salary and train to become a qualified teacher – learning from experienced teachers. Whichever salaried course you choose, both will help you to develop your skills to become a highly effective qualified teacher. Trainees on salaried programmes are recruited and employed directly by schools, and may continue teaching in their school following training.

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £26,000
  • a bursary of £24,000

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Computing or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Applicants will normally: hold or be expected to gain a 2:2 honours degree or above have GCSE grade C/grade 4 in English Language and Maths or equivalent

For a salaried route into teaching only strong applicants, with at least 12 months full time work experience (not necessarily in a teaching role, with a 2:2 or above will be considered.
