PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
More time spent in the classroom With elements of the course delivered online there is no need for you to attend centre or university-led lectures. This means you can be based full time in your placement school to benefit from immersion in the school environment from the very start of your training.
Teacher Training Enhancement Programme (TTEP) The TTEP suite of online resources takes you through the Professional Studies 1 and Subject Studies that you need at the start of your teacher training. Professional Studies 2 builds on this to extend and improve your teaching. This is supported by our pedagogy sessions that are aligned with the Teachers’ Standards to provide coherent examples of best practice.
Access to your dedicated online support package This is a suite of online facilities that allows trainees’ progress on the ITT to be tracked. This includes tools for lesson observations, mentor meetings, evidence tracking, and checkpoint assessments against the Teachers’ Standards.
School-based mentor support You will have a dedicated school-based mentor who will help you to integrate into the school and offer support and advice during the training year. Dedicated support via NOTT tutor Your dedicated NOTT tutor will support you through your training and will work with you and your mentor to help you gain QTS.
School placements
Initial Teacher Training is a professional course and we therefore discuss placement requests with our applicants. We aim to balance the requirements of the school, and it ethos, with the personality of you as a trainee. We also try to minimize travel time, as it is not the best use of that scarce resource! As we are a large partnership, both with number and geographically, we can meet most requests.
Our schools are either 11-16 or 11-18. You will be timetabled for classes across the 11-16 range, with additional post 16 experience if available in that school. If it is not, you will gain that experience in your second placement or enhancement week.
Interview process
At NOTT we believe that our children deserve the very best teachers and therefore our selection process is rigorous. It consists of four elements:
- interview -taught session -subject knowledge test -educational knowledge test
These four elements combine to allow us to assess your potential to train to teach with NOTT. The interview allows us to get to know you as a person, your interests and rationale for applying. The taught session enables you to show you natural flair and how you interact with children. The subject knowledge test is used to identify areas for work before you start, and the educational test shows us that you have an interest in current educational practice and school life.
Fees
Financial support
You could be eligible for either:
- a scholarship of £26,000
- a bursary of £24,000
To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Chemistry or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.
You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.
Find out how to apply for a scholarship. You don’t need to apply for a bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out how you’ll be paid.
You may also be eligible for a loan while you study – note that you’ll have to apply for undergraduate student finance.
Find out about financial support if you’re from outside the UK.
