Course summary

The Arden Forest Teaching Alliance, led by Welford-on-Avon Primary School, is running a School Direct Initial Teacher Training course beginning September 2020.

The programme is delivered in association with the University of Worcester, with trainees spending one day a week in University learning the theory and developing the subject knowledge that underpins successful teaching. The remainder of the time will be spent in school.

Assessment will come in the form of essays set and marked by the university as well as regular, ongoing assessment of teaching in school. Lesson observations take place regularly to give trainees constructive feedback about strengths and areas for development. Every half term there will be a visit from a university based link tutor who will observe with the school based mentor to agree grades and set appropriate future targets.

School based training will take place largely at Welford on Avon Primary School, although other partner schools may be used for specific parts of the training programme. All our partner schools are local and within easy travelling distance of Welford on Avon.

School placements

Successful trainees will be based at either Welford-on-Avon Primary School or another of our partner schools, based in and around South Warwickshire.

Trainees will be based at their main school throughout the Autumn and Summer term. In the Spring term they will spend a period of several weeks on a complementary placement at another of our partner schools to broaden their experience and work in a contrasting setting.

Throughout their training we aim to give trainees a broad experience of working in both of the primary school phases - Key Stage 1 (5-7) and Key Stage 2 (7-11).

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
