A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

The School Direct (training) PGCE Computing course, although an academic qualification, is rooted in gaining practical experience.

The course aims:

  • to give practical teaching experience in contrasting schools
  • to build confidence and help you reflect on your professional practice
  • for you to develop innovative teaching approaches, particularly in computing
  • to build confidence in designing and implementing stimulating resources for computing
  • to give you skills to adapt your teaching to respond to different pupil needs and wellbeing
  • to manage pupils’ behaviour whilst maintaining a purposeful learning environment
  • to grow confidence in the latest technologies and multimedia resources

Our goal is to ensure that all of our ITT trainees graduate prepared and inspired to create an exceptional and inspirational learning experience for every child in school.

We encourage a caring and supporting ethos through strong partnerships with our alliance schools. We see our trainees as individuals and will support, challenge and nurture you to become a confident and reflective practitioner in the classroom. No two types of support are the same and this unique approach will allow you to maximise your training year ready to begin your teaching career confident and ready to teach.

During your placements you will be able to teach contemporary methods and practices across a range of ages and abilities. Through a structured programme of observation, joint planning and delivery of lessons you will gradually build up to whole class teaching.

Most significant of choosing School Direct (training) is that you get to have a say in which school within the alliance you are placed. We work with you from the start to find the school that suits you and matches your location.

This is an intensive and demanding course, which offers superb preparation for anyone who is committed to educating young people. On finishing your training you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status and 60 credits towards a Master’s in Education.

There is also a strong possibility that trainees will be offered a position at their school at the end of the training year, or within Futures Teaching.

School placements

Futures Teaching consists of an alliance of primary and secondary schools. We have long established and loyal partnerships with a wide variety of secondary and primary schools, across a wide geographic area, including Coventry, Hinckley, Leamington Spa, Warwick, Rugby and South Warwickshire.

The alliance will endeavour to allocate school placements located most conveniently to the residence of the trainee. To qualify for QTS we will provide trainees with sufficient time in school to demonstrate they have achieved all the Teacher Standards. You will train in the 11 to 16 age range. However in many of our alliance schools there will be the opportunity to experience Post 16 as well.

Successful candidates will know which school will be their main placement when they are offered a place. The second (complementary) placement takes place in the first half of the Spring Term, and these will be discussed with the trainee and their school mentor before any decisions are made. This will be an opportunity to learn within a new school context and gain exposure to a new range of teaching and learning strategies to develop your practice further. Second placement schools will also offer a contrast in Key Stage and school context. You will be given the opportunity to visit this school prior to the placement to meet key colleagues.

Trainees are also required to spend one week (or equivalent) in a primary school.

80% of a trainee’s timetable will be in the placement school, with some time at university. You will work closely with your Subject Mentor, with weekly one to one meetings to monitor your progress throughout your placements. You will slowly take over a varied timetable, experiencing different year groups and abilities. A range of class teachers will be on hand to support you with your Subject Mentor being your consistent and constant guide.

We offer twilight bespoke training sessions to allow you to reach your potential.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in computing or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

The choice and decision surrounding equivalency tests is with the university.

Other requirements

Applicants must meet the Department for Education’s Initial Teacher Training criteria, which means being medically fit, successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and satisfying any other safeguarding checks required by this course.

While not essential, you may wish to gain some school experience before attending interview.

If you are a graduate and wish to train as a teacher but your degree did not provide enough subject specific content for you to gain automatic entry, you may be required to complete a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.

The DfE is offering tax-free bursaries of £24,000 in chemistry, computing, mathematics, and physics. Scholarships worth £26,000 tax-free will be offered in partnership with professional bodies for chemistry, computing, mathematics, and physics.

And are also offering a £15,000 tax-free bursary in design & technology, geography, and languages, including ancient languages, and a £10,000 tax-free bursary for biology trainees.

On finishing your training you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and 90 or 60 Masters credits, depending on which university you choose as your accredited body.

About the accredited body

Newman’s Primary and Secondary PGCE courses offer you strong partnerships with Futures Teaching schools in the West Midlands and South Warwickshire. You will be taught by qualified practitioners who are able to link different perspectives of primary and secondary teaching to the development of your practical skills in the classroom.

All PGCE routes at Newman will provide two opportunities, either:

  • A Professional Graduate Certificate of Education which will prepare applicants for teaching and offers full QTS, or
  • A Postgraduate Certificate of Education which will include 60 credits at Masters level and full QTS.

Interview process

The interview process is a chance for you to meet us, as well as us you. We hold interviews in a variety of alliance schools, giving you a chance to see the pupils, meet the Futures Teaching team and also specific school staff who will potentially be supporting you through your training and beyond. The interview may be online.

You will be required to attend one interview. Interviews include:

  • Exploration of curriculum knowledge
  • Discussions about relevant experiences
  • A presentation or small teaching exercise
  • Written or verbal discussion on literacy/numeracy knowledge

Prior to the interview you will be given a topic for a teaching task on which to base a micro lesson. This topic will be delivered to a small group of students. This is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your wider skills, attitude, aptitude and resilience that can be developed over the training year, rather than assessing specific teaching ability at this stage. You are not a trained teacher and will not be judged as such. Potential to teach is the focus of this exercise.

Towards the end of the interview we will discuss next steps with you; what choices of school you may have, how you can potentially accept our offer and how you can, if you wish, keep in touch with your chosen school, so that when you start the following September you are confident knowing the staff and pupils.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.
