About the course

Students on School Direct primary routes at schools partnered with the University of Wolverhampton will undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which will provide 60 credits contributing to Master’s level.

As part of the programme, students will spend around 120 days on placement and typically 50 days at university. School placements will be within the Elston Hall and St Bartholomew’s Teaching School Alliance.

Interview process

Applicants should apply through UCAS and the application will be jointly considered by the university and the Alliance. Applicants will be invited to interview and to complete a set of short professional scenarios involving reading, writing and numerical tasks. You may be asked to attend support sessions in English and Maths as one of the conditions of acceptance of the course. Those successful in audits and at interview will be required to meet enhanced DBS checks, fitness to teach and medical check and prohibition order check requirements. You will be expected to complete these forms once you have been successful and have a conditional offer. The charge for the DBS is £44 and ID check is £6. All offers will be made via UCAS.

How school placements work

Elston Hall and St Bartholomew’s Teaching School Alliance spans across two Multi Academy Trusts; there are nine schools within the two MATs and all placement schools are based across the Wolverhampton area. Placements will be within two or three of the nine schools. Candidates will teach pupils across the 3-11 age range and students will be based according to their suitability for the school/year group. Across the year, we will endeavour to ensure students experience schools of varying sizes/profiles and different year groups/Key Stages. It is the candidates responsibility to travel to each school and to the University of Wolverhampton when required.

Fees

The course fees for UK students in 2021 to 2022 are £9,250

Financial support

You may also be eligible for a loan while you study – note that you’ll have to apply for undergraduate student finance.

About the training provider

Elston Hall and St Bartholomew’s Teaching School Alliance was formed in 2015. Elston Hall Primary School is an Ofsted Outstanding three form entry school, and leads the Elston Hall Multi Academy Trust, which also contains Palmers Cross Primary, Edward the Elder Primary, Goldthorn Park Primary and Pheasey Park Farm Primary. St Bartholomew’s CE Primary School is also an Ofsted Outstanding establishment, and leads the St Bartholomew’s CE Multi Academy Trust, which also consists of St Benedict Biscop CE Primary School, Woodfield Primary School and All Saints CE Primary Trysull. All placement schools are within the Wolverhampton/South Staffordshire region. Both lead schools work together to deliver Continuous Professional Development to professionals across the city and beyond. Trainees across the Alliance are extremely well supported by their school-based mentors, and we have an exemplary success rate of Newly Qualified Teachers passing their NQT year. RQTS are also well supported across the Alliance. Working within the Alliance gives students have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of settings across the city, from one form entry schools, to schools with 700+ pupils. Both MATs also have a strong reputation of ‘growing their own leaders’ with many previous NQTs now in middle and senior management positions.
